There are now a few high profile jobs available in college and even a few in the NFL. Let's take a look at some possible ways these jobs could affect the Wolverines:
Penn State: Bill O'Brien had been rumored to be heading to the NFL for a few weeks now, so the announcement he is taking over the NFL's Houston Texans wasn't a shocker. I guess he grew un-happy in the Valley trying to make the Paterno's supporters happy. So he jumped to the NFL and picked up a team with a top defense and the #1 draft pick.
Michigan Impact: Minor, Michigan didn't really lose any top recruits to PSU but they are coming to the Big House next year. I expect the Nittany Lions to go after former Rutgers coach and now former Tampa Bay coach Greg Schanio. He was always rumored to be JoPa's replacement at Penn State anyway. It's sort of ironic that he had a chance to become a Big Ten coach with Michigan and now with Rutgers joining the Big Ten. The way he gets in is maybe with Penn State. They will want to move fast to save their recruiting class.
Texas: It all depends where they go. Why isn't Urban Meyer on their list? I think he would be a great fit at Texas!
Michigan impact: None, Michigan rarely goes head to head with Texas for a recruit. Unless they come to the Midwest for a coach, I don't think it will have any impact. (There are reports that Mark Dantonio is on Texas's interview list. Mark doesn't have an agent and might be considered more of a possibility after Sparty's win in the Rose Bowl last night, right now I think he is considered more of a sleeper pick)
NFL Openings: The Lions and other team have openings right now for their head coaching position. Some more may come open in the next few weeks.
Michigan Impact: Medium: The biggest impact to Michigan would be if Brian Kelly takes a new job. The Lions and Redskins I hear are interested in at least talking to him. ND has a number of players with Michigan offers and of course the Wolverines travel to South Bend next year. Lets take at a few recruits with Michigan offers:
- OL Alex Bars: Has a brother on Michigan but a legacy recruit to ND. Would be a tough pull to Ann Arbor if Kelly left.
- DE Jhonathon Williams, is from Michigan and had a Michigan offer after Hand picked Bama. He never really seemed interested in coming to Ann Arbor.
- Corey Holmes. WR from Florida has a Michigan offer and I think talked about a visit at one point. With Campbell's de-commit, Michigan could show Holmes a nice path to playing time.
- DB, Drue Tranquill Michigan decided not to offer and I assume are not interested.

It was interesting to see MSU's QB Connor Cook whenever he went to the sideline last night immediately engage with his QB coach Brad Salem. I doubt that Big Al has any time during a game for QB coaching given his OC role (but, perhaps the OC role takes minimal time during the game since the game plan is set in stone and "clock management" is an oxymoron).
Below see comments from George Winfield from "The State News" who runs the "nations top QB school"
GW: He’s (Connor Cook) a very talented, big kid. He and I have been in touch for a while now. He really is very impressive, strong arm, has a natural accuracy about him. I can tell pretty much within the first 15 minutes (with him), that him and Coach (Brad) Salem have done an awful lot of good things together — in my opinion, one of the top quarterback coaches in college football, Coach Salem. It’s just good just to know guys are supported and coached; it’s not like that at every campus, but you can see a lot of those things. So we really just tried to continue on the work that Coach Salem has done with him.
Michigan needs a QB Coach, there is no doubt in my mind!
You are absolutely correct Bob!!! I totally agree.
