Wolverine Wednesday: Worried About BBall Defense

Michigan picked apart another lower level Big Ten team last night by out scoring Penn State in Crisler 80-67.   When Michigan shoots well and gets offense from a true freshman (last night it was Walton with 16 pts.) they are tough to beat.  Nik and GR3 did what they do scoring 21 and 15 points.   Michigan also continued to have strong game from one of their low post players with Jon Horford getting into double figures with 11 points.

We all know that Michigan didn't get this 4-0 record against OSU and MSU but they are winning the games they should win.   The issue I see is that Michigan's defense continues to struggle without McGary in the lineup.    Michigan's opponents are getting in the lane much to easy and hitting short jumpers or layups.   Michigan will have to fix their defense quickly as the schedule is getting much harder with Wisconsin on the road, home for Iowa and MSU in the East Lansing in their next 3 games.  It will be nice to see if Michigan's smaller lineup can compete with the top dogs in the best league in the country.

  • Jeff Hecklinski is going to visit UCLA RB commit Marlon Mack in Florida on Thursday.  Marlon doesn't have an offer from the Wolverines yet but could be an option if Jeff Jones doesn't commit to the Wolverines.  Jeff is visiting A2 in two weeks.   With the dead period now over the Michigan coaches would like to finish the class with McDowell and one RB.

  •  Mike Hart and Marlin Jackson weigh in on the new Lions Head Coach:  “He was Peyton’s coach,” said Marlin Jackson, former Colts defensive back. “Peyton didn’t come into the league fully polished, and during his time with coach Caldwell, I think coach Caldwell can really be credited a lot with the success of Peyton Manning and the growth of Peyton Manning.
“He’s a great player in his own right, but he also had a great coach who was able to bring the best out of him.”--------------- “If you look at one overall word, it’d be ‘discipline,’ ” former Colts running back Mike Hart said of Caldwell’s coaching style. “Do what you’re supposed to do off the field, do what you’re supposed to do on the field. He’s big on that. Don’t lose the game for stupid reasons. Don’t lose the game for penalties, don’t lose the game for turnovers. Give yourself every chance you have to win the game.”

  • Looks like ND is going to stay in-house for their OC position by hiring WR coach Mike Denbrock.

Bob can anybody explain to me why Michigan Defensive backs never look back to the ball when covering their receivers? It just kills me when I see this technique.
