Michigan Monday: Transfer Punter and Lou Holtz Out At ESPN

I love how Jimmy is trying to make sure next season is a success.   One of this strategies is bringing transfers to Ann Arbor.   This has not been a common practice for our beloved program.   Michigan has brought in three transfer players since January and 2 are eligible to play right away.    The latest transfer is an Aussie punter named Blake O'Neill who punted for Weber State last year.

Your first thought might be, Michigan doesn't have a punter on the roster that can move the ball 40 yards down the field?  They might, but can he do this:

O'Neill finished sixth nationally (Football Championship Subdivision) in punting during the 2014 season at Weber State. He played in all 12 games and averaged 44.1 yards per punt, setting a single-season punting average record for the Wildcats.

O'Neill tallied 62 punts for 2,737 yards with a long of 74 yards. He boomed 18 punts of 50-plus yards and notched 25 boots inside the opposition's 20-yard line. O'Neill ran for a first down on a fake punt and tossed a completion for a first down on another fake.

This signing also gives Michigan ties into Prokick Australiawhich regularly puts kickers and punters into college and the NFL.   It's also a sign that Michigan is considering Special Teams an important unit and not an after thought like the previous staff did.

Welcome Blake!

  • In a rare move, Jimmy tweeted about the development of Lawrence Marshall during Spring Practice.  Expect to see this redshirt freshman a ton next season.

  • Lou Holtz and ESPN have parted ways in news that was breaking last night.   The split is being reported as mutual but with the change of Rece Davis taking over for Fowler on GameDay, changes were expected to both ESPN college football shows.   It will be nice to hear some fresh takes rather then "ND will win everything every year".

Couldn't agree more. I found him irritating and woefully uninformed. I can't tell you how many times Holtz would be rambling about something and Mark May would be shaking his head and doing a quiet laugh. In some ways, I actually feel sorry for him.

I'm wondering if Brian Griese is ready for a promotion, he seems to be a rising star on ESPN's College Football coverage.
