Boring Is Good

Julio Cortez, AP
Michigan started the game with a 100 yard kickoff return TD by Giles Jackson and really never looked back to an easy 38-7 win.   With that said, there is a reason we do Cheers and Jeers after games because the score really didn't tell the entire story.   The Wolverines lacked energy on both sides of the ball and didn't dominate in areas they probably should have.   The offense was a bit concerning with only 155 yards on the ground and 176 in the air.   The defense gave up a total of 233 yards but zero points.

Cheers:
  • Business trip and deal closed
  • No turnovers!!
  • Uche with 2 sacks
  • Metellus with 2 TFL's and a pick!
  • Mr. Jackson if your nasty with a KO TD
  • Will Hart averaged 50 on two punts
  • Tru Wilson had a nice 39 yard run

Jeers:
  • Against one of the worst secondary's in college football Shea was 13/22 for 151
  • No RB had more then 60 yards total
  • Turner ran the ball twice for -6 yards
  • No WR had more than 65 yards which was Nico with a 51 yard catch
  • Field goal kicking is a mess right now
  • McCaffrey looked shaky in relief of Patterson
  • Michigan Special Teams gave up a KO TD
I don't particular like bye weeks, I like to look forward to a Michigan Football game on Saturday.  I understand why the program needs them, I just prefer to watch the Maize and Blue every week.  There is plenty for this team to work on in practicce for the next two weeks before a rival comes to town and difficult trip to IU.

The one thing I know for certain and wish Michigan didn't have 3 difficult games left, is Dylan McCaffrey needs more time under center.   We have to start thinking about next season and this season if Shea gets hurt running the ball.  Dylan had some decent time to play on Saturday and went 3/7 for 25 yards and 4 yards rushing.    Do I need to mention again that Maryland is ranked #116 in passing defense?

A win is a win and it says something that Michigan was a bit sleepy but still beat Maryland by 31.   Funny what happens when you don't turn the ball over.

Wait ... oh yeah ... FIRE HARBAUGH ... NOW ...

So as original as that comment is... not sure anyone in this blog has that power. It’s not a terribly interesting topic, in part bc it’s not going to happen and also bc it’s an empty thought. If you want to suggest that he be fired, how about enlighten us all on what you would do next. Who will come to a program that fires its “prodigal son” coach after winning 10/games each but one year. Who in their right mind would take a job when Michigan would fire a Mich Man with those results.

Again, your idea of firing him is empty. But at least put some thought into it.

Geez GoBlu - it was SARCASM.

Apologies... didn’t come across that way.

But it’s a question I would love the fire-Jim crowd to answer anyway.

Tried to get that answered yesterday to no avail. Good luck.

Agreed - Michigan was sleepy as you state. One thing bothered me about the QB play. One of the game telecast broadcasters mentioned "Let's face it. Shea Patterson is never going to be a great passer". As a Michigan fan, although the statement was a 'Captain Obvious" type of remark, it still felt like a gut punch. It appears that all of the great championship-caliber teams over the last several years have had a future NFL-caliber QB, often with a Heisman-worthy performance. Each team's QB made it easier for the team's top running back(s), who in turn made it easier for the QB, who in made it easier for the running back(s), who then made it easier for the QB... ad infinitum. Without such perpetual motion drive in place at Michigan perhaps Jim Harbaugh should start emphasizing & expecting a high standard of excellence from his quarterback!!

Yeah renegade... dont get the few mamas boys going in here.... szanreno might cry if you pick on his little Jimmy Jim...

Cmfgoblue said...

He is the same guy that puts his Participation trophies on the mantle....

Cmf... asking you to answer a question about who would replace a fired Harbaugh means someone is a mama’s boy? Other people might see that as you being asked to think and explain. Usually insulting people is a sign that there isn’t much thought behind a statement. Still, would be great if you answered the question. Or for sure feel free to insult me simplistically too.

Ok..... many suggestions have been made.... Lincoln Riley was offered... by our own esteemed and usually right about most good Sir Michigan man... I offered many as well.... three of which have won super bowls...When saying Charles Woddson should be given a shot... it was humorous to my compadre.... the one you seem so inclined to defend....laughing about Mr. Woodson in any matter involving Michigan football should never happen.... maybe its not the first option.... when i was asked by the Arch Maester himself about playing the role of ad... i also suggested Urban Meyer... IF i was the Ad... my first thought would be not to listen to look through eyes of fans...( me being one) my job would be to put the best man in place to win games.... hmmmm well urban would win games.... he may be a creep though... so if i chose to continue the search than i would look to the Nfl and hopefully someone that had coached in a big market that was able to deal with a fan base such as this... so i thought of guys that had been around a while and could connect with young minds... so i thought of mike mcarthy...won a super bowl... or did rodgers? ..... Mike Tomlin... won a super bowl....John Harbaugh... sorry i couldnt help it! (Also won a super bowl).... how about the d coordinator for the niners? Huge intensity... younger... could be around ahwile.. but he doesnt check all the boxes i know.... so.... i would go with a choice like that... also this is much more entertaining than the games these days... also i was able to identfy the Arch maester as a mamas boy because i used to be one... i grew out of it... well i think?

Cmfgoblue said...

Mike mcarthy not a big market but a huge fan base that is passionate and cares like we all do....

I have a question for ALL of you harbaugh men and women.... Why should he stay? If we must answer the questions revolving around departure than please explain why he should stay.... his bowl record? Championship rings? Development of QB play? Record vs Top 25 teams? Rivalry record? His glasses? Commercials? Pants? Why in gods name would you allow someone to stay at a job that continues to fail? Should none of you be held accountable at your own jobs?

Goblu said...

So I guess I was hoping more for thoughts on who would actually do it, not your list. If Mich fires the person who was considered a savior, a favorite player and a true Mich man after winning 10 games/year most seasons - do you believe that a high profile person would take the job? That means they MUST win 11+ games plus Ohio each year or be fired too. Serious question to you - who would sign up for that, other than Hoke again?
Riley and Urban obv aren’t taking the job. Woodson is awesome but has zero coaching experience - but why would he take the job after seeing Jim fired with a pretty solid and growing record.

Goblu said...

He should stay bc he is a good recruiter and he’s actually building a stronger program after more than a decade in the wilderness. He does need to be better, and he has shown that he can adjust. He is a good coach and we are empirically getting better. Fully agree that it’s not good enough, but it is moving toward the right goal.

Enjoy this blog and the banter.

Guys...remember this is a business. Jim H. brings in huge dollars for Michigan. He is NOT going to be fired this year.

Look at Scott Frost at Nebraska. When a program is middle tier for so many years it takes time to change that. Many fans want/expect a championship in year two and if that doesn't happen they want the coach fired. So the head coach has lots of pressure from rabid fanbse. A middle tier program takes time to get good. Players need to learn how to win and fans needs to put down pitchforks.

Exceptions would be elite coaches like Saban and Urban. Those are only two I can think of right now that I would call elite. Other guys like Riley and Smart inherited strong programs. Time will tell for them. Dabo seems really good but his schedule is pathetically easy. If he can beat Bama twice in a row it will get my attention.

Many of these coaches cut their teeth in smaller programs for years before making it big time. If you remember Saban was at little bro for years and didn't have a championship. Harbaugh was an exception - he climbed through ranks quickly (too quickly in my opinion). I honestly think he felt he would walk into Michigan on a white horse and win championship after championship quickly. Coaching and recruiting coming much harder than he anticipated (my assumption).

If Harbaugh is fired I don't see any scenario where we get a bigger name. and some guys click with programs better than others. Even if Lincole R comes to town will he do better? Could he recruit in midwest? He hasn't much before.

Harbaugh has shown willingness to fire coaches. He is working on getting better. Look at trainwreck at Mich state. MD prefer to switch duties rather and fire and replace. When Dantonio was winning in felt it was fools gold...I have the same feeling with Franklin at Penn State.

Guys - we will get there.

Tim, like your comments. And agree -- what I was trying to write, but you did so much more thoroughly.

Cmf... no clue why you wrote well said, when Tim is NOT advocating for Jim to be fired. Shouldn't Tim be a mama's boy too ;)

Cmfgoblue said...

Because men can compliment ones even when they disagree my good man... It was well thought out and relayed very nicely no matter ones opinion of the contents of his post

Hell with it.... let us all be mamas boys... for the world may be a better place

Ha! Now that was well said!

Entirely possible that I have questioned if my desire to be a michigan fan was a wise course to fulfill a truly healthy and happy life on some saturday afternoons.... but like many of us you cannot help the blood that flows in your veins... anthony thomas fumbling the ball at northwestern caused my first true chest pain.... 2005 osu and 2006 osu didnt help... nor did 2015 msu or the 2016 iowa or osu games..... but none of them can change what i felt (we all) when Charles ran a kick back in 1997... or when John Navarre raised the ball over his head in 2003 after we beat osu... nor any comments from any football fan... oh yes i am a true blue... i also love my family even though many of them seem to not agree with everything i say... what a boring place the world and a football blog would be if we all agreed on every situation

Cmfgoblue..... there are a bunch of idiots here nothing but delusional Michigan fan don't see the reality ...these idiots think that we are a Powerhouse program and w we win national championship every year...
Anybody could come in here when 8 to 10 games every year... and pay them half the money you're paying Jim Harbaugh

Cmfgoblue said...

Completely agree! I appreciate your candid remarks and your wise viewpoints...keep them coming! Cheers Michigan Man!

Tim said...

Michigan man...at times I think we read two different blogs.

We are a bunch of delusional fans that think we’ll win championship every year? Who on this blog has stated we’ll win it this year? You fabricated that. I’m frustrated we are not better and I certainly acknowledge we are not elite. I have stated that and so many others have yet you continue to say we are delusional because we think we’ll win it all. Do you read any posts before you write?

And you feel anyone could win 8-10 games? Really? Tell that to RR and Hoke. In 7 years of coaching between them they did it twice.

It pains me we are not elite. I cannot even watch us against Ohio state. We are not elite. But I am a realist and still feel Harbaugh has better shot of B10 crown than firing him and starting over.

As you write about Lincoln Riley and your other spouting...I sit back and laugh. You don’t live in the real world.

Go ahead. Rip on me all you want. No worries. Heck, feel free to change your name again. This is, what, your third or fourth name since coming on this blog. You keep it entertaining my friend.

Goblu said...

Tim, only thing you’re wrong about is that Michigan Man reads the blog. He’s like the guy Abu from last year. Michigan Man is just an Ohio troll, playing with himself. It’s a good example of the diff between Univ of Mich and Ohio ... he has a loooottt of time on his hands.

Tim said...

Good call Goblu.

Damn Tim I'm glad I'm not the only one on here seeing this crap. There are several of them on here that have to have sore nuts from trying to stand on both sides of the fence at the same time.
