So this used to the most important time of the year for incoming athletes picking their school. The December signing period has made the February Signing day the equivalent of the Big Boy Mowers Bowl.
With that said, Michigan had a few holes in the December class that needs filling. If you remember during that time, there was more questions then answers about Michigan's staff including its head coach. How Jimmy kept that class together is really one of the most impressive things he has done in Ann Arbor as head coach.
Defensive Tackle was completely missing from the December signing day and the back story is, that Don Brown didn't like 300 pound run stoppers and wanted smaller faster guys that could rush the passer. The issue is, that DT's usually are not high sack total guys (unless your a freak) their job is to plug up the middle, eat double teams, and stop the running. IMO, Michigan has needed this role since Mo Hurst left for the NFL.
Michigan did receive a much needed commit from 4 star DT last week in George Rooks who is expected to sign on Wednesday. Which is some much needed relief for the new defensive staff. What about the other guys out there?
Rayshaun Benny, continues to say he is 100% committed to MSU and excited about heading to East Lansing. Unless he is running a reverse here, he is no longer an option.
Ike Iwunnah, is a intriguing new name that just committed to Colorado recently. Ike is a 3 star from Texas and the new Michigan staff is really giving him the full court press to sign with Michigan instead of Colorado. Ike also projects to a pure Nose Tackle which would be a huge win. Michigan couldn't be later to this recruitment but the U of M brand and a huge opportunity to play might be too good to pass up for this talented DT. If Ike were to sign, he would be one of the lowest ranked players in the class but maybe one of most important.
Michigan would also love a CB and another OT but there doesn't seem to be any available options in this signing period. Michigan will look to the transfer portal for CB, OT, and maybe a DT if this miss on Benny and Iwunnah.
- Ross and Jeter are both expected to return next year. Which is good news, Michigan can use both players experience.
- Michigan will continue its athletic shut down this week.
