Michigan Monday: 2022 QB Recruiting Update

Just to level set the situation, Michigan got a 5 star QB in the 2021 class who enrolled early in JJ McCarthy and the State of Michigan has a 5 star QB in the 2023 class in Dante Moore out of MLK in Detroit.

Those two things makes it very hard to recruit a QB in the 2022 class.  Now Dante is nowhere near a lock to Michigan but JJ is enrolled and learning the playbook everyday.  Michigan is really high on two QB's for 2022:  3 star Nate Johnson, who just visited this past weekend and 4 star CAL commit Justyn Martin who took his visit to A2 a week ago.

Nate is a bit raw and more of a Denard type of QB then a Tom Brady.  He said the Wolverine coaches are sending him clips side by side of Ravens QB Lamar Jackson.   There was also a video clip on social this weekend of him running into the end zone at the Big House.   Nate would be a great guy between two 5 stars and could always change positions if he ends up to be a great athlete.

Martin is 6'4 and more of a pro style QB.  He is also been on visit tour visiting Ann Arbor, East Lansing, and Ole Miss.  He threw for the Michigan coaches while in town and the coaches are pushing hard for this talented QB.   Martin will be at UCLA today for another campus visit.  His hometown is LA, so its a short trip.

These are the two top candidates for the Michigan's 1 and only QB spot in the class.  Both are out of California and have plenty of options to stay closer to home.

  • I wish Michigan was more active in the Transfer Portal with players coming in (they're plenty active with players leaving).   One new possibility is WR Daylen Baldwin who played for "Primetime" at Jackson State last season and the season prior Tyrone Wheatley at Morgan State.   Baldwin is 6'3 and 210 pounds and played his high school football instate at Farmington.   This past season he had 25 catches for 520 yards and 7 TD's.    He also was offered by Ohio State this past weekend as well.   Sam Webb and Allen Trieu both put in CB predictions for Baldwin to Ann Arbor.   Yes, Please! (to also be fair, Michigan has a QB and DT both coming in from the transfer portal this off season)

One Denard was enough. I hope Michigan gets the other guy.
