Wolverine Wednesday: Co-OC Matt Weiss Suspended

As I mentioned before, never boring covering the team we love.  Never boring.

As a Michigan fan we don't even have time to be depressed on what happened in Phoenix, as Harbaugary started right after.  Then it was Burger-gate, followed by Michigan's team staying together, and then Jimmy choosing to stay in Ann Arbor after Michigan's president gets involved.   Folks, that is only 2.5 weeks' worth of information.

I thought we might be good until National Signing Day in 3 weeks.  With the only potential hiccup being a Michigan assistant taking an NFL assistant gig.  Then last night happened.

Matt Weiss has been suspended and is being investigated for "computer access crimes" that happened at Schembechler Hall a couple days prior to Christmas.  Then we all thought, what could have happened? Was he watching porn at the office?  Was he placing bets? Folks on the message boards thought computer access crimes is a criminal term for "hacking".

As Michigan reporters continued to dig, Josh Henschke found a public U of M police report for the same time period: “An employee reported fraudulent activity involving someone accessing university email accounts without authorization. Upon further investigation, it was found that a crime may have been committed,” the report read.

So what the hell happened? That is what the investigation will find out.  As we know, email is no longer managed onsite with a few Microsoft Exchange Servers, it's managed in the cloud by Microsoft, Google, etc.

Here are a few guesses?

  • Are there public PC's in Schembechler Hall?  Meaning a computer many people can access for doing homework, managing compliance, time cards, etc. It's pretty common for someone to log into their email and then leave without logging out.  This is a common mistake and shouldn't lead to any crime, unless someone starts sending emails from the forgetful person's account.
  • Did Matt hack into someone's email for some reason?  That wouldn't be good.  Again, you don't need to be a computer genius to guess someone's email password.
  • With technology, mistakes happen and for some reason, Matt could've logged into his email and found that it was someone else's account.  If he wasn't paying close attention, he could've even started sending emails, not realizing it wasn't his account. Again, that seems like a technological mistake not worth investigating.

This seems very strange; I have no idea why a Michigan Coordinator would want to log into another employee's email.  Are you trying to find information about a player's eligibility? Grades? Is he dating another Michigan employee and things are getting messy?   Hopefully, it was an honest mistake and this gets resolved soon without fanfare or criminal activity.

Matt to ESPN: "I am aware of the ongoing investigation by the University of Michigan Police Department and fully cooperating with investigators. I look forward to the matter being resolved. Out of respect for the integrity of the investigation, I will not have any further comment."

  • Vote for Hutch for NFL Rookie of the Year: Here
  • The rumors are flying that Gattis is out as OC at Miami.  Reports are he has been interviewing at Iowa and could get his old job back as WR Coach at Penn State.   Miami's QB coach just left to take his old job as the OC at App. State and one of their top ranked QB's from last year's recruiting class hopped into the portal on Tuesday.
  • Today is the last day for players to jump into the portal.  There will be another small window in May.   Players already in the portal don't have a deadline for making their new school decision.

so using a university computer for porn or online betting is inappropriate and a firable offense at most places of employment, it certainly doesn't rise to the level of getting law enforcement involved unless it involves minors! Perusing someone's email after they inadvertently left it open again is a breech of etiquette but not sure if it was a crime. If it was, I should of had my ex arrested........lol And if he hacked someone's email account, that's just not smart! I've read reports that the police went to his house, which doesn't sound good. They only do that when there's something serious. I won't speculate, but just doesn't sound good at first blush.

I agree w Chowman. Definitely a sticky situation. I had an ex girlfriend tap into my phone's text messages. I should have called the poe-poe on her, too!

I'm chuckling about the Josh Gattis situation in Miami. I didn't like how he left Michigan high and dry, then stole some of Michigan's recruits to take w him to Miami. Mario Crystobal is a duche as well, paying cruits before NIL existed. Love watching Miami suffer!!

One big fish left in the pond for Jimmy to recruit. That's Nyckolis Harbor, the TE/WR/LB, freak of an athlete that can run a 10.2 100 meter. Can never have enough of these game breakers! Get em, Jimmy!

Unless I'm totally off base here, I would imagine that Matt's time is up anyway. I hope he's cleared of any wrongdoing, but I would imagine that the University will gently nudge him out the door no matter what. Moreover, if Warde and Jimmy aren't on good terms as has been stated in the media, then I would also imagine that he's (Warde) updating his resume because when it comes to choosing between the value of Harbaugh and the AD, then the successful head coach wins all of the time. IMHO!!!

Brady,

I think Gattis actually thought Jim was getting the Minnesota job and he was going to be the next HC. Plus, the offense we've ran the past 2 seasons has no relevance to speed n' space! I think Josh was a bad hire, but can you blame the guy. If Jim calls you and conducts an interview over the phone and offers you the OC gig, you turning it down. I've seen it too many times in my career, people getting jobs that were over their heads and it ended badly. I don't hate on anyone's hustle, but either way, Josh wasn't long for AA.

I looked up Harbor yesterday and 247 has him trending to South Carolina for what its worth.

Voice of Reason- Never trust the media. Let's wait for the facts before jumping to conclusions. Lots of corrupt people in general out there that want attention, revenge, job advancement, etc. The alterior motives could be limitless. Hope for fairness and transparency in the process. If in fact guilty of something serious, then no man is more important than the program. God speed!

Chowman, I think Gattis was in over his head everywhere he's been. I think Michigan taught him a lot and gave him some recognition status. Then he tried to parlay that O.C. of the Year award he got into a giant pay day. Didn't show much gratitude to Jimmy. Don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya, Josh!

S. Carolina will break the bank to get Harbor, if you know what I mean.

Brady:

Devil's advocate: I remember some of the sidelines shots from 2021 and the relationship between Jim and Josh looked a bit icy. It just jumped out to me. Maybe it was the heat of the moment. I know I've seen Saban dress down his coordinators on the sidelines multiple times. Just don't think Gattis was coming back either way: his choice or Jim's. They weren't on the same page!

Chow- You might be right. Good insight there.

So in the State of Michigan (and California where I believe it was taken from almost verbatim when it was adopted) this particular charge almost always requires a direct/indirect financial loss. Most other things that you think of as potential computer crimes either now have their own specific criminal statute or would be handled under the statute pertaining to the underlying crime that took place that happened to be perpetrated through use of a computer. If the claim going around is correct as to what crime they're looking at, this isn't merely accessing someone else's account because it was still logged in; this is looking at a potential case of intentional access that knowingly resulted in the victim occurring a loss.

Plenty of negative attention already in the offseason, and it just began. Hope this is a nothing burger, but if it is....why does the press seem to be feasting on every little morsel coming out of ann arbor! Seems not much is really being said about the fact that a GA player was just killed in an accident at 0-dark thirty with a Staff Member driving, coming home from a team party, and possibly alcohol involved. Extremely tragic and also suspicious. That kid's family just got rich from the lawsuit they are about to negotiate. That is huge and yet the press seems to be less than interested.

Maybe he was looking at Harbaughs emails to see if was leaving for the nfl.
