Harbaugh and his staff did alright last year when it comes to the bonus department. I'm all for paying up to keep good assistants and rewarding them when they do things like win championships. Keeping good assistants and coordinators helps with consistency and recruiting. Michigan never should be the program "low balling" assistant coaches.
Here is how the staff got paid their bonuses:
Sherrone Moore: Salary $900K: Total Bonus $525,000 ($100K finish top 2 in Big Ten scoring offense, $100K for finishing top 10 scoring offense in the country, $200K for winning 12 regular season games, $75K for winning the Big Ten, and $50K for reaching the CFP).
Matt Weiss: Salary $850K: Total Bonus $525,00 ($100K finish top 2 in Big Ten scoring offense, $100K for finishing top 10 scoring offense in the country, $200K for winning 12 regular season games, $75K for winning the Big Ten, and $50K for reaching the CFP). Matt was fired for some type of computer access impropriety.
Jesse Minter: Salary $900K Total Bonus $425K ($200K for winning 12, $100K for top 10 scoring defense in the country, $75K for winning the Big Ten, and $50K for reaching the CFP). Jesse missed out another $100K because Michigan finished 3rd in the Big Ten in scoring defense.
The remaining 7 assistants all got $75K for winning the Big Ten, and $50K for reaching the CFP bonus. Mike Elston has a special contract that doubles that bonus, so he got $250K.
That is 2.475M in Bonuses for Harbaugh's assistant coaches. If Michigan had made the NC game each coach would have made $25K more.
Jimmy didn't do too bad either. He got $500K for the Big Ten East, $1M for the Big Ten Title, and $500K for making it to the CFP. His pay was over $10M last season.
What changes would I make?
The odds are if you win a Big Ten Championship you are going to the CFP. Having two different bonus line items for that is not very clever. How about changing that bonus to WINNING a CFP game and WINNING a National Championship? Come on Warde, don't pay your coaches just to get to a game, pay them to win it!

Yet there are some that think Warde does a good job. He's not Bill Martin, but a University like Michigan should have a top 5 AD, Warde is not that!
