Ohio State doesn't like finishing 2nd to Michigan in anything. They have had that feeling for the last 2 years as Michigan has won back-to-back Big Ten Titles. Now, they are looking up at Michigan in recruiting budgets.
In the recruiting world, you have to spend money in recruiting to cement the relationships you need to have top players commit to your university. Your first thought might be the Happy Meal bags full of cash for recruits' families. That is not what I'm talking about. Recruiting expenses cover transportation, lodging and meals for recruits, additional personnel for official and unofficial visits, phone charges and postage for pursuing recruits and the value of schools' vehicles and planes or those used by the school for recruiting.
Georgia was the highest spender at $4.5M, then Clemson at 3.1M, Texas A&M and Tennessee both spent just under $3M at year. Michigan came in 8th in spending at just over $2.2M which was the highest spender in the Big Ten. OSU must be second in the Big 10, right? Nope, Rutgers was second and Ohio State ranks in the top 5 of Big Ten spenders at 1.3M. That will not make OSU fans very happy.
Another question you might have: Michigan spent $2.2M and got the 18th ranked class in the country? In recruiting, you are really trying to build future years and I believe you're seeing the results pay off in the 2024 class.
If you wondering MSU spent just below $1M.
- Good luck to Michigan Hockey in the Frozen 4!
- Enjoy the start of the Masters today!

Recruiting cost is just the price of doing business! Factors outside that cost include NIL, performance on the field, and the security of the coaching staff staying in place. Look I get having a good coaching staff is going to encourage poaching from other programs and the pros. But having a HC who annually shakes his money maker for any NFL owner that cares to watch (doesn't seem to be that many) doesn't help. Neither does laying an egg in the CFP semi-final. After the euphoria of winning back-to-back B1G titles and beating the hated buckeyes back-to-back, the CFP games have been major let downs! As far as NIL, I've come full circle. At first I was give a recruit whatever he wants. If boosters want to pay the freight, what do I care. But seeing schools like Miami, Texas A&M, OSU, and Tennessee getting burned by bad NIL deals, I'm more on the side of come here, prove you're worth and you'll get the deals. Not putting the cart before the horse! Maybe burned is too strong a term, but definitely not seeing a return on equity!
I wouldn't be surprised if the aforementioned [and et al] schools are paying families above and under the table. The NCAA has created the Wild Wild West in college football. IMHO!!!
