Michigan Friday: Big Ten QB's Starting at Other Programs

The Big Ten gets hit with the boring football label by the media quite often.  The SEC has NFL type defenses, Big 12 has explosive offenses, and the PAC 12 plays in a different time zone 😀.    What I find interesting is tracking the former Big Ten QB's that have left their program for another opportunity.  Does this mean the Big 10 offenses are better than we think? Or maybe there just aren't enough good QB's to go around.

Here is a list I have so far:

-Former Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz is the starter at Florida
-Former MSU QB Payton Thorne is the starter at Auburn
-Former Michigan QB Cade McNamara is the starter at Iowa
-Former Michigan QB Joe Milton is the starter at Tennessee
-Former Michigan QB Alan Bowman is the presumed starter at Oklahoma State
-Former Nebraska QB Casey Thompson is the presumed starter at FAU
-Former Indiana QB Michael Penix is the starter at Washington

Other Big Ten QB's transferred but I was more interested in guys that were expected to start.   For example, Jack Tuttle went from IU to Michigan and of course is not the starter.   Did I miss any other starters?  Also, it seems Michigan can recruit QB's.  (Alan Bowman was not a recruit and transferred in from Texas Tech).

Some high profile QB's coming in include: Hudson Card from Texas and now is at Purdue and SMU's Tanner Mordecai is now at Wisconsin. Do you think we might see a different offense in Madison this year?

  • Big Mo Hurst is having a nice preseason for the Browns.  If he can stay healthy, he might have a very good year.
  • Tomorrow is 2 weeks from kick off.  Time to start focusing on season and week 1's opponent.

The Mertz thing is going to be an interesting watch. Going from Anthony Richardson to him is night and day. I just don't know what a FL offense will look like with Mertz at QB. Both Auburn and TN are 2 SEC teams that are living in the past. Auburn's pinnacle was when the won the Naty with Cam Newton, then it all burned down with NCAA violations and has never been the same. TN has been irrelevant since Peyton Manning left. Tee Martin was ok, but since then their QB play has been MEH at best. Cade at Iowa, Iowa's had the equivalent of homeless guys playing QB for the past several years. Plus that offensive scheme is offensive! I've always liked Michael Pennix but the knock on him is staying healthy!

I'll even go farther with the Graham Mertz thing: I think Billy Napier has a real possibility of being Mel Tucker of Florida. Tuck's golden goose was K9, and made him look like a better coach than he was. I think Anthony Richardson did the same for Napier. It wouldn't shock me if the wheels completely fell off at FL. I get Mertz was a 5 star, correct me if I'm wrong, but the 1st 5 star QB recruit in Wisky history but...... He just never passed the eye test. I get the Wisky offensive scheme was remedial when it came to a passing attack under Paul Chryst. But Mertz never looked like a 5 star QB. Maybe he flourishes under Napier at FL and I sound like an ass, but Leopards just don't change their spots!
