Michigan Friday: End of the Week News and Notes

  • Sounds like Sherrone is about to hire two new staff members to the non-field coaching staff. Former Ravens LB Pernell McPhee and Lionel Stokes who knows LaMar Morgan and coached DB's at Howard State, Jackson State, and Nicholls State.
  • There is a trend showing former NBA players not doing well as college head coaches.  Jerry Stackhouse was fired from Vandy yesterday.
  • Jon Sanderson is now a S&C consultant for Illinois Basketball.
  • With the top 2 bullets and Michigan Basketball having a historically bad season, they have hired a 3rd party to review the culture of the Men's Basketball Program.
  • Jourdan Lewis has re-upped with the Cowboys.

That's interesting, a 3rd party review of the B-ball program. Idk if its just at Michigan, but a whole systematic problem. Players stay for one year, barely develop, and bolt to the NBA. When they get to the NBA, they don't play (Jet Howard) and are sent to the G-league. EVERYONE is worse off. The college play is poor, the NBA draft is poor, the development is poor, the entertainment for fans is poor. 20 years ago I could tell you who the top 10-15 draft picks would be. Now, I couldn't even give you a name.

Good for Jon Sanderson. I read up on what happened with him and Jace in the weight room. Jace was berating and insulting a Michigan staff trainer. It was going on and on, with Jace talking down and belittling the trainer. Sanderson was listening from afar and hollered to Jace to knock it off and don't be disrespectful to a staff member. He told him "You are not entitled here. You are a student athlete and should always talk to UM employees with respect!" Juwan came over and didn't like the way Jon was talking to Jace. Heated words ensued.

I can't blame Sanderson. He stood up for what was right. Sad scene, man.

Why hire a 3rd party?
Isn't the decision to determine whether there is a septic culture the job of the Athletic Director? That's Warde Manuel's job.

Manuel is punting and IMO the fact that he's not handling this indicates both weakness and/or inability to handle the problem.

Thus, the question is this: Is Warde Manuel really up to the job as AD?

People like Warde hire a 3rd party to deflect accountability. He is the worst.

Nice comments from Wink re Rod Moore:

"Rod Moore is...I'm not talking about play wise or anything else, but smart wise and football knowledge wise, he reminds me of Eric Weddle and he was one of the smartest safeties I've ever coached," Martindale said of Moore. "I called Weddle and told him about [Rod]. That's exciting to me."

Tom- Good point. I was always taught as a manager to get in the trenches with my employees. Talk with them. Get their thoughts and views. Its the only way to know what's going on.

Maybe being a college A.D. has become like being a CEO of a corporation and has to delegate things. Idk about Warde.

It's sad that Juwan Howard didn't do better here but he dug his own hole and jumped in it

No drinking and driving, Mr Scruggs, got to use better judgment than that

Ok, Juwan fired, Scruggs arrested. Bob, where you at???

Brady2017 said...

I'd fire Scruggs. Smh

Regarding Juwan, I've never been a big fan of former players transitioning into great coaches. The true great coaches were never great players- Beilein, Izzo, Dean Smith, Rick Pitino, Bobby Knight. In fact, I challenge anyone to name a former great player that was a better head coach?

Brady, that's a good challenge but old Phil Jackson. Won 1 NBA title as a player and 11 as a coach? Forgive me I didn't Google the exact number of championships but we both get the point. It's very rare for a player to be better than he was playing as a coach.

Brady2017 said...

Dvzk- Nicely done. I'll give you that one!

Dvzk- Didn't Pat Riley play? If he did, I don't think he was known as a great player. But he definitely was a pretty good head coach.
