Michigan Monday: Depth No Longer an Issue in the Secondary

Many of us were wondering out loud if Michigan was going to add depth to one of the best defenses in college football through the transfer portal.  Well the quietness of portal activity became a scream over the weekend as Michigan brought in 4 new defensive backs.

Aamir Hall - is an FCS All American from Albany and expected to play CB.

Wesley Walker - started his career at Georgia Tech, transferred to Tennessee, spent Spring Ball with Louisville and now has committed to Michigan.  He is expected to play safety.  Expectation is both Hall and Walker are graduate transfers.

Jaden Mangham - from Michigan State.  Jaden played some Safety a true freshman and became a starter in 2023.  He was a 4 star recruit out of Oakland County in the 2022 class.  He is coming to Ann Arbor as a true junior with two years to play.  Normally, I would be a concerned about a true junior getting passed admissions but the State of Michigan has a program for instate students looking to transfer.

Ricky Johnson - CB from UNLV was a surprise commit to me on Saturday.  Ricky had 71 tackles, 14 pass break ups and 4 picks during his time in Vegas.  Ricky had committed to Washington State but changed his mind after visiting Ann Arbor over the weekend.  Johnson will also have 2 years of eligibility remaining.   I hope there are not any admissions issues here with what I stated above

If Michigan can get a backup DT and one more WR, they would be set for the 2024 season.  I don't expect Michigan is looking or would find a starting QB in the portal at this point.

  • Michigan and MSU seemed to have worked a trade on Saturday.  Jaden Mangham to Ann Arbor and LB Semaji Bridgeman to MSU.   Michigan got a starting safety and MSU got a LB with 4 years eligibility.
  • Michigan Softball worked its way back into the Championship game after losing early in the NCAA but lost to home team OK State in the final.
  • Fanatics is suing Marvin Harrison Jr. for breach of contact
  • Lions signed former Wolverine TE Sean McKeon

Do we need a backup QB from the portal? If Orji is going to be running a lot, I'm sure he will be taking some hits. Tuttle would fill that role, but he always seems injured. Wouldn't mind a true drop back passer to compliment Orji.
