Wolverine Wednesday: My Takes on the Stalions NetFlix Documentary

If you haven't watched this UnTold and want to, I would not recommend reading this post.

It's clear that Connor Stalions loves Michigan and always has.  How Connor is different then us, he did whatever he could do to support the team with the dream of becoming a Michigan coach someday.  He went to the Naval Academy because he saw that some of the greatest coaches were in the Military prior to becoming a head coach.  He would live in his car so he could afford to fly to every Michigan game and volunteer for whatever the coaches needed.

The documentary was done pretty well.   A couple strange decisions, they had some OSU Blogger in disguise who was afraid to show his face as he was worried about his mom receiving death threats.   I assume the interview was done in his mom's basement.

They also highlighted Detroit News columnist Tony Paul, who did his interview from a completely empty Detroit News office.  By the way Tony covers Michigan State.   Which seems like a strange choice.  They also had Ryan Day's college buddy from the Washington Post.   Was this a documentary on sign stealing or the decline of newspaper journalism?

Other thoughts good and bad:

  • Connor became elite at stealing signals through watching film
  • I was surprised to learn he did speak to the NCAA with his lawyer
  • I still don't know if that was him on CMU's sideline.  He told the NCAA he did not recall being at that game.
  • Connor did receive film from other people he bought tickets for other games
  • It seems there was some nefarious activity in hacking Connor's laptop/email and that there continues to be unanswered questions regarding this firm who has been feeding NCAA information and their connection to Ohio State.
When the documentary ended I thought it had answered some questions and left a few unanswered.  Then I got angry when I saw who was an executive producer on the film.   Two names were listed in one shot.  Those names were LeBron James and Maverick Carter.

You have to be kidding me?  LeBron and I assume Maverick are huge Ohio State fans.  They should not have their names on any type of investigative journalism documentary regarding Michigan.   Now I know how that weird OSU blogger got on the film.

I guess nothing can be done with credibility anymore.

Dave Portnoy said "creative editing" made it look like he said Stallions told him he was at the CMU-MSU game, and that he didn't really say that. Bob is correct. Journalism ethics are at an all-time low. Too much fake news and click bait.

The show never attributes the Detroit News and Sharty sympathizer so that’s a bit disingenuous. And right….no idea why they included that suckeye loser and never ask him any follow up questions…just allow him to spew rhetoric. Bottom line; all program have sign stealers but once again, UM finds a way to do something better than the rest….they got a savant! The NCAA got their info from a source that obtained it illegally. Sure sounds like lawsuit material. And Pete Thamel….would someone please punch that dbag in the throat!
