Michigan Monday: The Back-Up Bowl

Ever seen a game where neither fan base wants to play in it and most draft eligible players on both teams are going to opt out?  A game that is put together not by match-up but by brand name?  By corporate types looking, not for a good football game but for ticket sales?

Somehow Alabama misses out on the playoffs because the leader of Michigan's program and his over paid buddies decide SMU played better in the 2nd half of the ACC Championship game and deserves it more.  I assume Warde was too busy doing his side hustle to notice that he was sending his football team to Tampa (not to eat Bloomin Onions) to play that same team.   Somehow Warde got a 5-year extension out of this.   The lack of leadership this position has at Michigan is astounding.

I'm sure there will be fans on both sides clamoring for their $85 tickets this morning to watch the Back-Up Bowl.  This game should be sponsored by Drew Brees restaurant chain Walk-On's.  Nothing like playing for everything this time last year and now playing for the Reliaquest trophy.

Now onto the important stuff.  The Transfer Portal opens today and Michigan has a lot of work to do.  They have a long shopping list which includes:
-QB
-OL
-TE
-RB
-Punter
-DT
-CB

They need a ton and this off season and will have plenty of time to evaluate talent to get the right fit for the program.

  • Michigan QB Denegal is entering the portal.  Good Luck to him!
  • Michigan OT Gentry is entering the portal.  Good Luck to him!
  • Michigan LB Pollard is entering the portal.  Good Luck to him!
  • Herbie's son Chase a 2025 QB will be coming to Michigan to play QB.  I thought it was as a walk-on but it seems they are using a scholarship on the young man.  Chase is not ranked 3-star but played QB at St. X in Cincinnati.  This will not go over well in C-Bus.   This goes down as the surprise of the weekend.
  • In what world does it make sense to pay a baseball player a 15 year $765M contract?  When MLB has to go through a reboot, the owners will be to blame.  They have lost their minds.
  • Michigan Basketball wins a close on against Iowa at home on Saturday.  2-0 in the Big Ten!

Losing the tackle Gentry is a big loss I wonder why he's transferring out I hope he decides to stay.. I didn't expect the tough opponent like Alabama in the bowl game but it's got to be what it's got to be

"Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne said Sunday that he would need to assess his nonconference scheduling philosophy moving forward after the Crimson Tide were the first team left out of the 12-team College Football Playoff field."

.....yet Alabama's three losses came to in conference opponents....and their non-conference was Wisconsin, Western KY, and Mercer.................shut up

Not to rant too much (but to rant a lot), b/c it doesnt really matter with our team this year - but I hate all the lobbying and crying heads when CFP rankings come out. I also question whether or not the SEC (top to bottom) is SOOOOO MUCH BETTER than everyone else. Honestly, maybe the power conferences are much closer to one another - Oregon won the Big 10 (was in the Pac 12 last year), Texas came close to winning the SEC (they were in the Big 12), SMU in the ACC (they were in the AAC), Arizona State wins the Big 12 (were in the Pac 12).

Alabama, you lost 3 times, two were bad losses. Yea, you had some good wins too , 3 top 25 wins. But sorry, you shouldn't just be able to get in b/c you are Alabama. Also, all this talk about "no top 25 wins for SMU", well Texas has no top 25 wins, so you should be above them too right? (Penn State beat Illinois which is 20th currently, Notre Dame beat Army which I suppose is 22) Indiana has no top 25 wins.

Ole Miss was also talking - you lost at home to Kentucky (which i was happy), unranked LSU, and unranked Florida....

I would like to see the CFP committee be more permanent members as we get these changes and I think that makes it harder to "learn" from year to year, and then maybe dont give top 5 conference champions first round byes - they get in but just seed them.

Yea, i guess i would like to see some more importance with SOS when they can - but if you are banking on your SOS mainly coming from your conference games, idk...maybe there is more parity from conference to conference than what we think. Also, maybe SOS comes more into play when you have the same record, not when you have 3 losses to 1.

Bob, I don't understand why you are all worked up over a meaningless Bowl game. Chill, bro. I'd rather play Bama than Middle Tennessee State on Dec.21.

Bowl games are not what they used to be. Play the underclassmen (Jadyn Davis) and see what they can do.

Herbstreit's son commits to Michigan. 😆 🤣 I'm glad Kirk got another dog, btw.

And if you play Jadyn Davis and he looks like ass, then you have his transfer portal papers conveniently sitting in his locker for him.

Ron- There's nothing at stake in these non playoff Bowl games. Smart coaches will uses these games to try new things and give bench players time to shine.

Bob, the Mets owner is a HUGE fan and just wants to win and has more money than patience. Mets fans have to love this as the previous ownership group was broke ass and HAD to pinch pennies to run the club.

I agree with Brady, your going to see guys get some run that we probably all forgot were on the team.

Chowman said...

Agreed, if I see Davis Warren out there I'll lose my mind! The only reason I'll watch is to see guys that I haven't seen before, otherwise, I'm turning the channel.

Getting Herbie's son on scholarship should get Sheronne an extension.... simply for the troll factor. Bucknut fans are going ape-shit in their forums. It's the funniest thing to happen in college football in years.
I'm not a bowl fan, and hope the playoffs will ease all other bowls out of existence. Waste of time - focus on next year and on recruiting.

Brady, well I'm from a different time when bowl games meant everything no matter which one you were playing in.. it was a momentum builder going into the next season.. I guess we just come from different times think differently

Problem is with the portal you don't even know who's going to be on the team. Michigan will be adding player via the portal that won't be playing in the bowl game and then after the spring game, you'll have some more guys leave via the portal when the find out they aren't on the 2 deep. Not saying I like it, but that's the reality of college football today..

Ya, Bowl games have definitely changed. It used to be an honor and privilege to get invited to a Bowl. Now, its been reduced to basically a cooperate cash grab.

Gentry was the starter in the spring and fall practice only to be told on game day that he was no longer the starter. Not given a reason. When he did play, he scored higher than Link. Newsome is not an OLine coach and is hurting the room.

Aimtubbs said...

Even Saban himself said no coach has room to whine given they had the ability to win games and not leave it up to a committee. There are so many whiny lil bitch coaches anymore; Kiffin, Smart, ...put name here.

Here's rooting for the Volunteers! How long until the boo birds show up at the shoe? As soon as they punt, they'll start booing. Worse fan base in the country!
