Wolverine Wednesday: Portal News and Notes

Recruiting is a crazy world but I think the Portal might have it beat.  Not only do players jump into the portal they make really quick decisions.   As they are not usually making a 4 year decision, they are making a 1 year business decision.

Portal News:
  • Michigan is going to get a visit from Dequan Finn who was at Baylor last year but got injured in the 2nd game of the season, prior to Baylor he played at Toledo and started his career in 2019.  He is originally from Detroit and would need a waiver for his 7th year of college football.
  • Former 5-star DT from Alabama Damon Payne is in the portal and one you should keep an eye on.  Damon is from Belleville and many expect Michigan to be involved in his recruitment.  Update: Damon is BLUE and just committed!! Update #2: It seems there is an issue with his paperwork signed at 9:30 this morning and that paperwork has been nullified.
  • Jaishawn Barham is expected to stay in Ann Arbor and move from LB to edge rusher which seems to be his best position.
  • Michigan seems to be involved with USC WR Zachariah Branch, who also has a DB brother Zion (in the portal) as well.  Another brother combo?  Yes, please.  A unique note, Zachariah is in the portal with a do not contact designation.   Sounds like he knows where he wants to go. He already took a visit to A2 a few months ago (when USC played in the Big House) and is a Jordan sponsored athlete.
  • Michigan is also expected to get a visit from Alabama RB Justice Haynes. Who is considered one of the best RB's in the portal.
  • Top Portal TE Max Klare visited Ann Arbor this week and could be close to a decision.  Schools involved include Michigan, Texas A&M, Texas, and Louisville.   Kline and Klare running around in defensive backfields next year sounds pretty good to me.
  • Cam Calhoun a DB who once was a Michigan commit, went to Cincy, then last year to Utah, is in the portal.  He is visiting Bama and expects to visit Ann Arbor.
On to other news:
  • Dusty put together a tough schedule for the Wolverines, which hopefully pays off in the Big Ten.  Michigan plays Oklahoma tonight in the Jordan Classic.
  • Ambry Thomas got cut by the 49'ers yesterday.  He came off IR and got his walking papers.  Why do they have to cut Ronnie and Ambry within a couple weeks?  That is some BS.  Lions maybe?
  • Former Michigan LB Hill-Green is back in the portal after having a huge year for Coach Prime at Colorado.  After Michigan he played for Coach Biff and Coach Prime.

I know Brady will throw shade my way, but I'd take Finn. He's thrown for over 7000 yds and has 64 TDs. Yeah, he also has 23 or 24 ints. Good with the bad. We need a body, sometimes you take anybody! You're not getting the top portal QB. Nobody of that ilk is coming to AA to "compete" with BU!

Yes to Zac Branch. If I recall correctly, he's a burner???? Even if he's not, WR room needs help!!!

I can't hate on Thomas to the Lions, again, they need bodies! Only thing is I really don't know what kind of person he is. Dan and Brad have a personality type that they look for. Grit mentality and no divas. Don't think Thomas was a bad dude at Michigan, but sometimes guys develop bad habits in the league!

No shade at all. Different views add interest. I just think we can do better than the 41st ranked transfer portal QB.

Is Brad Holmes acquiring guys with a history of injuries? I mean the amount of injuries is off the chart this year. Smh. Gut punch, for sure.

Branch didn't like being using primarily on kick returns. Hopefully Chip and Sherrone can convince him that Michigan's new offense will include the forward pass.

I just think its going to be a hard sell as a lot of these guys want to go to a place where they are given the starter job. I know coaches will say its merit based, but take OSU for example, you know Ryan Day told Will Howard he was going to be the starter before he committed.

Brad does bargain hunt in FA and signs guys from the scratch and dent aisle. But I also blame the NFL scheduling. I think there was a 4 game stretch were the Lions played 4 games in like 16 or 18 days. Need to get rid of the Thursday night games. They mostly blow, and we really don't need it. And we really didn't need a 17th game. Just think its too much football with bodies that are too big and too fast. Human body wasn't designed for the punishment of pro football.

Word on the street says Ohio St. has their replacement for Ryan Day lined up and waiting in the wings. It is Mike Vrabel. No pressure on Day in the playoffs. Lol

Heard he's the Bears top choice

I'd pass in Damon. His stats are pedestrian at best and sounds like his handlers just want the biggest bag
