Commitments Commitments Everywhere

*Programming Note: Sorry for the non-post on Friday. That real life got in the way.

Now on to the real news: Michigan picked up two solid commitments in the past 48 hours, one for football and one very important basketball recruit.

First Football: Mike Jones a 6"2 197 pound 3 star Safety from Orlando Edgewater high school verbally committed to The Wolverines for the class of 2009. Mike is Michigan's 14th commitment for next years class.

As always the lowdown from VB:

Jones hails from the same high school as junior WR Greg Mathews, which gave him something of a familiarity with the Wolverines (of course, former Edgewater players litter the rosters of such programs as Florida, Ohio State, Notre Dame, UCF, and so on). Though he grew up a Miami of Florida fan, the Canes never played a large role for Mike. From early in his recruitment, Jones indicated that not only was he open to leaving home, but also was favoring a few schools in the midwest. Michigan offered Jones in late spring, and the Wolverines joined Notre Dame at the top of his list. Jones took a late June visit to the campuses of both schools, and at this time, Michigan may have moved to the front of his mind. Without a solid scholarship offer from the Irish, Jones picked Michigan on August 1st.

Now to Basketball: Darius Morris a top 100 point guard from California and always considered a Michigan lean, made it official today.

Per UMhoops:

“It came down to picking the school that showing me the most love and that school was Michigan,” Morris said. “They have been recruiting me hard for a while now, and that was one of the big reasons I decided on going there for the next four years of my life.”“I took a recruiting trip there earlier this year, and after I saw the campus, I knew it was the place for me. Picking Michigan was a big step for me. Knowing that I have a spot secured at the Division I level is big. It’s a relief. Now, I can focus on bringing back some of the tradition there.”
The Rankings:
Rivals: #70 Overall, #10 PG, 4 Stars

ESPN: #79 Ranking, 79/100 Rating

Scout: #13 Point Guard

Morris’ ranking has fluctuated up and down this summer and will probably change again when the final post-Summer rankings come out on the various recruiting websites. I think Morris’ ranking is somewhat restricted as the summer progresses there are a lot of guys who come onto the radar out of nowhere (think Manny Harris) compared to Darius who has been on the radar for a while. For these “out of nowhere” guys it’s a lot easier leap frog over the already ranked players with one or two good tournaments.
