So with Michigan near a full class for 2009, recruiting the key positions are starting to slow down.
With less then a handful of spots left for 2009 the Michigan coaches will be very picky on the next few spots. Here are some news and notes on some of the gentlemen that might fill those remaining few:
- Safety/Athlete Thomas Gordon (teammate of William Campbell and Teric Jones at Cass Tech) won't announce his decision this weekend as originally planned. It is believed to be a race between MSU and Michigan with Illinois making a late charge. Update: Gordon's announcement is back on for Friday. My guess is that Michigan only has a few spots left and if Thomas wants one he needs to act quickly (I'm not sure what the rush would be to pick MSU?)
- Michigan is still in the running for 5 star WR Rueben Randle from Louisiana. Rueben is a teammate of Michigan commit DeQuinta Jones. Rueben is one of the top WR in the country and has offers from every major program in the country. Don't expect an announcement anytime soon from Rueben who might even wait until signing day to announce.
- Another 5 Star prospect on Michigan's radar is Maryland linebacker Jelani Jenkins. With the loss of two 4 star LB's from this years freshman class the LB position has become a big need for the Wolverines. Michigan defensive coordinator Scott Shafer was on hand this past Saturday to watch Jelani play. “A lot of things stand out,” Jenkins said. “They have a great tradition and obviously a good football team. They have a new coach that has a lot of prestige.”
- In town to visit this weekend is a nice list of recruits including: 4 Star offensive guard Quinton Washington, 4 star Baltimore running back Tavon Austin and current verbal commits: Shavodrick Beaver and Florida linebacker Brandin Hawthorne. As you might expect it's important that Michigan add at least one more Offensive Lineman in this class.
- Taylor Lewan a 6-foot-7, 272 Offensive Lineman received an offer from Michigan yesterday. Taylor is a teammate of Craig Roh in Scottsdale and is a 3 star prospect.
- One other OL to keep an eye on is Ohio's Chris Freeman. He is a huge young man with very little football experience (6"7 325 a 3* prospect, some reports have him as tall as 6"9). He plays at Trotwood-Madison, the school that provided current Wolverines; Roy Roundtree, Michael Shaw, and Brandon Moore.
My wish list for the rest of the class would include: William Campbell, 2 Offensive Lineman, a 4 star DB, and any 5 star guy that wants to sign up!
