Michigan 14 Northwestern 21 Game (Set Match) Review

3-9 that will be Michigan's record at the end of the year. It will mark the first year of the Rich Rodriguez era and will also be remembered as the worst season in Michigan Football history.

We all wanted change didn't we? This wasn't the change we had in mind. We knew this team was young and dumb, but we thought something more along the lines of the Music City Bowl bad not 3 wins bad.

The game against Northwestern was the perfect example of what this team has lacked all year: the knowledge of how to win football games. Michigan has a long list of problems, but that is the number thing this team has lacked this year. They have been winning every game they have played this year (besides Notre Dame) and can't find a way to win games. The other team makes an adjustment and the Michigan offense goes in the tank. The game today was another perfect example of just that.

Let's take a look at all the missed opportunities:

  • Michigan picks off a pass on the first possession which is returned to the red zone. Blocked field goal = 0 points

  • Michigan muffs a punt = 7 points for Northwestern

  • Michigan's all American punter punts the ball into the back of the Michigan blocker = 7 points for Northwestern

  • Michigan picks off a pass in the 4th quarter that is returned for a touchdown. Ruled out of bounds at the 45 (terrible call by the refs). = 0 points

  • Threet misses the wide open Tight End Mike Massey and throws a pick in the end zone. = 0 points

  • Odoms drops the ball on the last drive and Brown stumbles over his own feet with nothing but open field in front of him = 0 points and end of the game

One of these types of plays will get you beat by a good team. 6 of them will get you beat by a bad team and that is what happened on Saturday. Northwestern has 8 wins but they really are not very good. Believe me, they don't want to have anything to do with an SEC or Big 12 team in a bowl game.

Michigan needs to learn how to win and next year they better find some scheduling help to get them that confidence or 2009 will be similar to this year.

As for next week? Let's hope Michigan can stay within 30 points. I know this is a yearly tradition for many fans but if you're a Michigan fan you might want to do a little Christmas shopping instead.

Let's hope this wasn't a wasted year and just a baby step in the right direction.

This season shows how much college football revolves around the quarterback position. UofM has crap for quarterbacks this year. Threet and Sheridan couldn't hit a wide open receiver all year. Why wasn't Feagin playing more? That being said, UofM played a lot of true freshman this year...other than Matthews, the WR core was seemingly all true freshman. Growing pains is to be expected. I'm disappointed in the defense, which was supposed to be the strength of the team. Learn how to tackle! That being said, I'll watch the OSU game and hope we can keep the margin of defeat under 3 touchdowns.
