Michigan Walk On's Should Earn Scholarships This Week

As you know, Rich Rodriguez has always prided himself on running an open program. Whether it's the media attending practice, letting the media talk to his players (might need to re-visit that policy after this week), or letting other students be a part of the Michigan program as a walk on. We also know Rich Rod was a walk on himself at WVU and turned out to have a pretty nice career in football.

We are expecting to hear later this week that Coach Rod will be giving a number of walk on's on the two deep depth chart a scholarship.

It seems former walk on and 5th year kicker Jason Olesnavage will be named the starting place kicker. I would assume Jason is probably all ready on scholarship.

I expect the "new" open scholarships to go the fellow walk on's:

  • Redshirt sophomore linebacker Kevin Leach
  • Redshirt sophomore safety Jared Van Slyke
  • Redshirt sophomore defensive end Will Heininger

Others that could be considered if there are scholarships available are:

  • Redshirt freshman strong side LB Floyd Simmons
  • Redshirt freshman Safety Jordan Kovacs (whose father played CB for Michigan in the 80's)

As you might expect the players that have been with the team longer get priority on the scholarships.

All players above are listed on the depth chart as back ups. Congratulations gentlemen and I'm sure your parents are very happy!!

What about Kelvin? Did he already earn one after walking-on?

Great question. I believe there was an agreement between him and RR when he was thinking about transfering basketball schools that he would be on scholarship, but I haven't have heard anything offical on that.
