Michigan Monday: Baseball Information

The rumor mill/Internet is spinning that Michigan's new head baseball coach will be former Wolverine and Cincinnati Red's infielder Chris Sabo.

Chris was born in Detroit and played high school ball for Detroit Catholic Central.   After playing at U of M, he played for the Reds from 1988 - 93 & 96, Orioles 1994, White Sox's and Cardinals in 1995.  Chris made it to 3 all star games in 1988, 1990, & 1991.

I don't see any coaching experience for Chris on Wikipedia, he did flirt with coaching a minor league team outside of Cincinnati in Florence, KY in 2001:  Mr. Sabo, who lives in Montgomery, said he had had very little contact with baseball or baseball players since retiring from the major leagues in 1997, other than some brief coaching with local high school and college players. “I didn't even know what the Frontier League was,” he admitted.

The assumed front runner for the job was Kent State's Scott Stricklin who just lead his team to the College World Series.   There were a few Internet reports that he had turned down the job.

Former Michigan Baseball Coach Rich Maloney is back at Ball State after coaching the Wolverines for 10 years.

  •  2013 Michigan Running Back information:  Derrick Green says he will re-visit Michigan this summer (date TBD).  4 star RB Jordan Wilkins will be in town this Tuesday to visit Ann Arbor"I'm just going to go wherever I feel most comfortable and to a place where I get along with the coaches," he said. "Also, a place where I can get a chance at some early playing time."

  • 2014 DB Damon Webb from Cass Tech is a fast rising 2014 prospect.   He got a recent Michigan offer and now both MSU and OSU has followed up with offers.   Let's hope Damon stays with the rest of the Cass Tech pipeline and goes Blue!
