Brady Hoke and staff can recruit. No doubt about it. They have the #2 ranked 2013 class and a top 10 class in 2012. Michigan's 2013 class has been close to full for months now.
The only thing that remains is the final two spots and it seems the final two sometimes are the hardest to fill. Here are some updates from some of the final candidates to fill those spots:
Laquon Treadwell: Enjoys recruiting and the recruiting the process. The latest from him is that he will now be visiting Florida and LSU. He seems to feel that he is a better fit for a spread team then a pro style offense (Florida is a pro style offense). He continues to say that Michigan is his leader but he likes every new college that starts to recruit him. We know that Michigan will be a pro style after Denard graduates. I don't think Laquon is a lock for this class and I wouldn't hold my breath on his recruitment.
Derrick Green: Had a great visit to Ann Arbor over the weekend. He spent 3 days in town and there were plenty of reports he was close to a commitment. That didn't happen and insiders really don't know what his timeline is. Many believe if he were to announce this week it would be for Michigan. Like I said yesterday, the longer his recruitment goes the worse it is for Michigan's chances. With only two spots left, my guess he will need to move in the next 30 days or so if he wants to be a Wolverine.
Leon McQuay III: Leon dropped Michigan from his top 3 after Michigan picked up another DB and after the Michigan coaches told him they didn't expect a spot to be left for him after the BBQ weekend. As we know, there were no public commitments made this past weekend and we still expect two spots to still be open. Leon's camp told a recruiting service that they were going to announce tonight and then backed off that announcement. Leon was quoted this weekend that he wanted to take his time and do so visits to his top 3 which are Vandy, USC and now FSU. Vandy has 15 verbals, USC is expected to be full at 18 and FSU has 16. So why would Leon even be considering announcing now? He hasn't visited USC yet and many expect his leader to be Vandy. Was Leon thinking about jumping on one of Michigan's last two spots? He said he has not dropped Michigan completely just out of his top 3. Your guess is a good as mine on this one.
Devon Allen: Was in Ann Arbor this weekend and really enjoyed his visit. This visit helped elevate the Wolverines with Devon as he got to spend some good time with the coaches. He also seemed to hit it off with Michigan commit Jake Butt. Devon is a good student and would like to major in engineering. Devon is very early in his recruitment cycle and I don't expect him to make a decision anytime soon. He also visited OSU and ND on his Midwest tour.
A name we are not tracking: WR Da'Mario Jones from Westland John Glenn. He is not ranked but is 6'2 185 pounds and visited for the BBQ. He has offers from Bowling Green, CMU and Toledo. Da'Mario is rated 2 stars by Scouts and does not have a Michigan offer.
Crazy Thought: If Silas Redd transfers to USC (decision could come today) could that effect Ty Isaac and his commitment to USC? Silas is expected to be a one and done if he stayed at PSU but would have two years of eligibility left if he went to USC. Justin Davis another highly ranked RB is also committed to USC in the 2013 class. USC has 7 tailbacks on it's current roster. It's a long shot but worth a thought.
Names off the board:
Kendall Fuller - committed to Va Tech this weekend.
Alvin Baily - who lite up the Gridiron Kings this past weekend and is teammates with Leon above. He hasn't committed but has said distance will be a factor and is looking to stay closer to home in Florida.
As we stand right now, I don't feel confident with any of the above recruits (unless Derrick pulls the trigger quickly). It might be time for the Michigan coaches to send out a few more offers or play the waiting game with these top guys.
