Michigan Monday: The Day After and Catching Up

After a tough loss, one of the first things that come to mind is: Who will be on the team next year? Mlive asked the players in question and to a man they said they needed to talk to their family and coaches before making a decision.

Here is my take on what I think will happen:

  • Nik is gone.  He had a great year and I think he will jump to the NBA and be a first round draft pick.   His dad detailed it a few months ago and then back tracked off of it.  I think that was the plan all along.   This time a year ago, I never thought he would be a 2 and done.

  • GR3 is 50/50.   He has had a nice year but not a great one.   I think he needs another year in college to work on his game, before jumping to the NBA.  Scouts have him as a second round pick.

  • McGary is 50/50 as well.  His health is the biggest question, he might need one more year in college to prove he is healthy.  He is projected in round 2 but could jump to round one with a clean bill of health and great work outs.

If Michigan loses all 3 guys, they will have an incredibly young team on the floor next year.

While I was out, Michigan received a big commitment from the best player in Virginia for the 2015 class.  4-star defensive back Garrett Taylor committed to the Wolverines a week ago.  The Michigan coaches have done very well in Virginia lately, as they have pulled Green and Speight the last 2 years.

Garett is 6'1 and 188 pounds and in the mold of what Mattison likes in a DB.    He has a ton of offers from some big named and school and fell in love with the Wolverines after his visit a couple of weeks ago.   His plan was to take his time in his recruitment, but the small Michigan class made him make up his mind quicker then he originally expected.

This is a nice pick up for the Wolverines and its great to have another commitment after losing two high profile guys recently.  Garrett is the 5th player committed for the class of 2015.   As of right now, there are only 7 spots left in the class.   I expect this number to grow to probably a class size of 15-16 players.

Stauskas would be very stupid to go pro. He's nowhere near where he needs to be from a ballhandling and defensive standpoint. GR3 could go now and I think he'd be late 1st round. McGary will stick around 1 more year then go. To tell you the truth, I wouldn't be surprised if all 3 stuck around. None is a lottery pick by any means.

I read an article by Zach Travis on Maize n Brew, saying Nik is 95% sure to jump.... His logic was #1, Nik has nothing to gain staying, his stock can't go up any higher. (really, so he's a lock to be a lottery pick? I disagree)
and #2. He has nothing more to prove in college ball.

I agree w/Big35Hurt on this one. Mitch might go, to ensure a paycheck, if he plays another year of college ball and has a re-occuring back problems he may miss his shot at ever getting to the NBA.
GRIII will definately benefit from another year of developing his game, look at the improvement from last season to this season?
Nik may not gain nearly as much next season as he did this season, but experience and polish would certainly only increase his stock.
IMO
GO BLUE!

I can see the arguments from each side regarding all three guys. I was recently listening to someone who (I forgot his name) is a NBA scout for a number of teams and he was reviewing the likely players for the lottery. He named Nik as someone who is a 5-10 pick. Teams like the fact that he is a legitimate marksman.

He felt that GR3 was a good player and many teams kept an eye on him because of his father; they wanted to see if he was a thoroughbred. They like him but they don't love him. In my reading between the lines, if he had a great year he could be a solid first rounder, but as it stands right now they see him as a second rounder. So is it worth it to leave early for a possible second round?

Regarding Mitch M., he's not even on their radar. His medical condition needs to be taken from the table. He's not a Nerlens Noel that many believe will come back from what some experts call a "good" ACL tare. As unspoken as it has been, the back issue scares a lot of teams in every sport. Having had a back issue myself, I can say when it hurts it immobilizes you for days. In discussions from other NBA big wigs they won't waste a first rounder (or at least a high draft pick) on him. He needs to prove himself if he wants to be drafted anywhere near his fullest potential. IMO... any team can risk a number two on him because it’s a low risk high reward. Many second rounders don’t make the roster. He can definitely be signed as a free agent, but if he wants the big bucks, he needs to risk coming back for another year and prove himself. Yes, it's a big risk and his decision will (kind of) let us know where he's really at by the type of risk he's willing to take. If he leaves this year, then he's worse than we thought. If he's truly back, then he's willing to play next year. IMHO
