Michigan Thursday: Ranking the Michigan Coaching Search Candidates

It's hard to know if David Brandon is rolled up in he fetal position in the corner of his office dreaming about Jerry Jones or is really trying to find a new head coach.  David of course is worried about his own job, so maybe he just continues to send pizza and flowers to President Schlissel's house.

When considering a new head coach, I prefer to rank the candidates in my head.  Sort of like Mel's NFL Draft Big Board on ESPN.    Here is my board:

  1. Jim Harbaugh, HC 49'ers - all signs point to him being out no matter what.  So it's probably Super Bowl or he is out.
  2. John Harbaugh HC Ravens - Super Bowl winning head coaches don't go back to college unless its at the end of their career.  I have a hard time understanding what his motivation to coming to A2 would be, but there are rumors he might be interested.
  3. Les Miles, HC LSU - Big name but probably too old.  Could be a 5 year option which doesn't seem too bad right now.  I think he would take the job in a New York minute.
  4. Dan Mullen, HC Miss. State - He is a younger coach and his name always seems to pop up when Michigan has an opening.  He is having his best year at MSU this year and might be a "hot" name come December.   Will take a big check to get him for sure.
  5. Josh McDaniel, OC Patriots - I'm the only guy talking about this candidate but if you think outside the box, he maybe could be a good fit.   Could come with a high recommendation from Tom Brady and has been a head coach.
If Michigan has to go deeper then 5 candidates, it will not be a successful hire.  The Big Ten is not playing a ton of good football right now, but is full with good coaches.  If Michigan is going to compete with the Meyers, Dantonio's, Franklin's and Fitzgerald's of the world they better get a very good head coach in here.  The only coach that would worry Urban Meyer is Jim Harbaugh.   Mullen used to work for him and he had plenty of match ups with Miles.   If Florida becomes open Mullen will be a top candidate for that job.

BTW: John U Bacon said on the radio yesterday that if he had to guess, he would say that Brad Bates would be the new AD and one of the Harbaugh brothers would be the head coach next year.  None of the top candidates would work for Brandon.

The last few years have me very pessimistic regarding Mich football. What are the chances Brandon is not fired and he either keeps Hoke or hires another chump?

Sheesh. There are a couple heavy handed, angry dudes that post comments on this blog...

Right now, I am growing increasingly concerned with our new President and his apparent lack of appreciation for the importance of the football program and our need for change. I am very concerned about Dave Brandon appearing to be staying put with his big name Donor support. Whether Hoke coaches the rest of the season or not is irrelevant. This season is a bust. It all comes down to the President and the Regents getting Brandon out. And he needs to go ASAP. It takes time to bring a new AD, and when he gets in he needs time to get into the mix, time for him to begin the coaching search firm data compilations, time for the back door conversations, and time for the hires to come to fruition. So if Brandon were to even stay until December, we compromise our ability to get on this with the requisite amount of preparation and efficiency we need to better assure ourselves a successful outcome. The new coach has to be hired at the beginning of December. We are running out of time. And because we are NOT seeing any of the changes happening at the director position, it looks like Brandon will be the man selecting our next coach.

Unfortunately Dave Brandon is treating Michigan athletics especially football like Domino's pizza. Everything at the Big House went up in price except the football team. It's like driving a big name car with cheap rims and tires.

RR & AZ are undefeated, on top of the PAC at the moment.

I looked at an article from 2011 the other day " Dirk Nowitski is the greatest player on earth" Heard much about him lately? All this stuff will be over in a few months. I for one like Hoke & think in 2 years the team will be badass. Too much hysteria . Take a breath.

I'm 65 yrs old. Seen itall. Used to be called" Mythical National Championship" because you can't really prove one team is above the rest. You'd have to play a series of heads up games like baseball. All this "playoff " resolves nothing.

How dare fans question a coaching staff that has failed to improve the program. How dare fans expect a coaching staff that has as much resources as anyone in college football and has top ten recruiting classes to perform at an elite level. Michigan fans shouldn't expect more than 7-5 seasons, shouldn't expect a team that competes for Big 10 Championships, and Bob has no business giving his opinion in HIS OWN BLOG!!!!
Or so says a few 'better than the rest of us' fans.

If u don't like what u see here, do all the rest of us a favor and stop visiting....

I think you could take the cumulative knowledge about college football of all commentators ,bloggers etc. and fit it nicely into a thimble. Any of you ever organized a ptactice session? Or thought about how to strategically organize the sessions in order to maximize player growth? Let alone win the confidence and admiration of 115 young men? Then try to get them all on the same page for even one game plan? Think not. Hoke is a fine man who has positively affected thousands of young men. How many of you have done anything approaching that? Leave him be.

ARE YOU SMOKING WEED? Did you really read what you posted? Oops my bad after all for a guy making 3,000,000 Hoke has accomplished something no coach has ever done by running this football team down and embarrassing this program by making negative national headlines.
