Michigan Monday: Coaching Matters

Thanks for all the kind messages, while I was out last week.  Friend and BHB reader Augusta J always tells me "I really hate it when you go on vacation"   So I appreciate all of you that are back at it this morning!!  :-)

As Michigan fans we are born to hate the likes of Tom Izzo and Urban Meyer.  Which makes sense because they coach at Michigan's biggest rivals.  Why would we like them?   We want to win every game we play against State and OSU.   But that feeling of "hate" is really burying the lead, which is these guys are very good coaches.

Meyer took his third string QB to a National Championship and now Izzo is back in the Final 4, with a team that was properly ranked as a 7th seed in the NCAA Tournament.   This goes back to my theory that in college football and basketball, having a top tier coach is the most important thing for your program.   Alabama can't pay Nick Sabin enough money for what he brings to the program.  Do you remember what it was like before he got into town?

Michigan for the longest time had the opposite problem in both of it's money making programs.   We had good talent and not enough coaching.   When RR got into town, he thought he could continue to recruit 3 star guys and win.  He was wrong.  When Hoke arrived into town, he recruited his butt off and lost with quality talent.

In my mind, this means having a top 10 coach really has an impact on the program.   It's more important that a 5 Star WR or a 5 Star shooting guard.   It's the most important thing.   Izzo is a freaking wizard when it comes to the NCAA tournament.   He won't win the NC but my goodness that team shouldn't be anywhere close to the Final 4.   Coaching Matters!

So go continue to hate Izzo and Meyer because of the color of their shirt, but respect them as coaches and what they accomplished.   Also be happy we finally have our football coach and our basketball coach can develop NBA draft-able players.   Were finally in a good place guys and we should be happy that two Big Ten teams made the Final 4.

  • We are a week away from seeing Jimmy as the head football coach in the Big House.  I hope all of you attend!!

  • I guess Jimmy is bringing back the helmet stickers.  I sort of like keeping the best helmet in the NCAA clean, but if it makes Jimmy happy, it makes me happy!

  • Scouts #1 basketball player in the 2015 class Jaylen Brown recently visited A2 and it sounds like Michigan is in his top 2.  Of course the second team could be NC or UK.

Since this is Monday, we will take a stronger look at the Spring Game and visitors as we the week matures.
