Michigan Thursday: Bring Me Your Quarterbacks!!!

I wrote a post about two weeks ago saying that I believe that Jimmy wants a roster with nothing but quarterbacks.   We spoke about the two guys he signed in this recruiting class, we spoke about confirmed transfer from Houston John O'Korn and we even talked about another possible QB graduate transfer from Iowa Jake Ruduck.

The Jake Rudock transfer stuff was just a rumor and mostly from the Iowa side of things.   That changed yesterday as Bruce Feldman tweeted the following:

Bruce Feldman         @BruceFeldmanCFB

QB Jake Rudock, who started 2 yrs at , is transferring. He will visit next wk,source told @FOXSports. As a grad, is elig. now

To review Jake's career numbers:
  • He started two years 2013 and 2014 seasons
  • He has thrown 34 TD's to 18 picks (16 TD's to 5 Int's last season)
  • He completes 60% of this throws
  • Averages 200 yards a game passing
  • Runs for an average of 15 yards a game
  • In his first year starting, Jake threw for 239 yards with 2 TD's and 2 Picks to beat Michigan at Iowa in 2013.

I saw very little of Iowa last year and Michigan does not play them again this year.   With Jake visiting next week, this has now become a serious option.

With only a handful of practices, it's probably too early to say how Michigan's QB's are doing.  With that said,  Malzone and Gentry could probably use a red shirt year, this is Speight's first year in the Harbaugh system and he didn't get many snaps last year.  It's also no secret that with poor coaching, no red shirt year, mono his senior year of high school and relying too much on his rocket arm, Shane has been struggling to grab that starting gig.

Jake to me seems like a "game manager" who throws for two hundred yards a game and scrambles for a couple of first downs.  He only threw 5 picks last year and seems to be a pretty accurate thrower.   With hopeful improvement from the offense line and a stable of strong running backs, having a game manager at QB sounds pretty good.    We also expect the defense to be very active and the strength of the team.    This should equal some 21-10 wins, but after the past 7 years or so, we will take it.

Jake could be a great solution for a year, while the other guys learn the system and improve their QB's skills under Jimmy's tutelage.

  • One category of QB's that I left of was walk-on's.   Michigan baseball player Ramsey Romano has joined the team as a walk-on QB.   That is 8 QB's in camp right now.

  • Starting center Jack Miller will not be back for his 5th year. He wants to focus on his studies and business opportunities after graduation.   Look for Pat Kugler to be odds on favorite to be the starting center this fall.

Miller is a pretty big loss.
