Michigan Thursday: Draft Day

Today is the first round of the draft and the only potential Wolverine that could be taken is Devin Funchess late in the first round.  As I mentioned yesterday, his slow 40 at the combine and questionable hands could cause him to drop to the second round.   Don't be surprised if New England takes him with the last pick in the first round.  We know how much Belichick likes large athletic tight ends.   I still don't expect to hear his name until Friday.

Frank Clark will probably be taken in the 4-5th round and Jake Ryan and Devin Gardner are expected to be free agents.   A smart GM would use a draft pick on Jake and sign Devin Gardner as a priority free agent.  DG is a football player and would have a positive effect in any locker room.

I would hate to have the first two picks this year.   I think Winston has too much risk off the field and Mariota reminds me of Joey Harrington, a great kid off the field and a talented college QB that never translated to the NFL.   If I had to pick one, I would go with Mariota knowing he would be a great face for my franchise.

  • Greg Dooley at MVictors.com took a tour of the Big House recently and came away with some new photo's.  As we have heard, the legend patches have been discontinued.

  • Stevie Brown has been signed by the Titans.  He has had a very nice NFL career.

  • Recruiting travel has to be tough, but not so tough if your visiting this player (now with a Michigan offer): Honolulu (Haw.) Kaiser 2016 offensive lineman Michael Eletise.

  • Mark Richt might need to get out of the house more.  Speaking of Michigan's camp in Ann Arbor in June and Jimmy inviting all coaches, he was quoted as saying:   “I don’t know how many guys wanna go up there and freeze their tail off."    I sure hope it doesn't snow in June!     Poor Mark, doesn't understand the concept of summer.
