Wolverine Wednesday: No Man Can Predict the Future

That's Harbaugh's "safe phrase" if an NFL owner comes with a bag of cash, long term contract, and a steady front office.  Paid blowhard Colin Cowherd says that the Broncos are going to offer Jim a Walmart worth of money at $20M a year.  That would really change the perception of the term "Walmart Wolverine".   Also, Cowherd says anything that comes into his head.  One of his more famous lines was that UConn to the Big Ten was a done deal.

I thought there was no way Carolina would go back to the college ranks for its next head coach.  After I put that in yesterday's post.  Carolina's owner and Jimmy had a conversation.  Not an interview, but a conversation.  Somehow a local TV person got a hold of Jimmy and his response was the one we have heard a few times now, no man blah blah, I expect to be the head coach of Michigan next season.

What we want to hear is, "I'm a man of my word and coaching Michigan next year and beyond, the NFL rumors are not true and stop calling me".   We did not get that.  PFT says that it's a two-team race between Carolina and Denver right now for Harbaugh.  Both teams have deep pockets, new ownership, and want a winner badly.

Speaking of not being able to predict the future.  Two Michigan defensive linemen have decided to use their Super Senior year at another school.  To be clear, these could be the decision of the player or the program since they both have been around 5 years already.

Julius Welschof  - was a chemistry project when they brought him over from Germany in 2018.  He is a 6'6 athlete and a guy Don Brown had hoped he could turn into a pass rushing machine.  That never happened and Julius was more of a special team player his entire career.  I hope he finds a great landing spot and gets some minutes on defense.

Taylor Upshaw - has been a good contributor his entire time at Michigan.  His stat line this year was 12 tackles, 4.5 TFL's, and 2 sacks.  Not to mention, a game ending interception against the Buckeyes.  Taylor is a solid run stopper and a guy that plays hard and doesn't make a ton of mistakes.  Every year we expected a break-out year from Upshaw and he would turn in a good one.  He has a COVID year and hopefully he can find the right defensive system to help him pad that stat line and get him an NFL look.

Both of these guys had 5 years and Michigan has over 100 guys on scholarship next season.  Scholarship limits no longer matter with NIL, so Michigan isn't trying to cut numbers to make 85.  Still, you have to move other guys into the lineup to see what they can do.

  • The TV ratings are in for the CFP and both games averaged 21.7M viewers.  The Michigan game capped out at 26.4M at 7:45.  The viewership was up 28% over last year's semi-finals.   After a great Saturday for ESPN, there was an executive crying in a corner at their Bristol HQ, because a Michigan - OSU final would probably double the viewers of the actual TCU - UGA final on Monday night.
  • Speaking of the National Championship game, I checked ticket prices prior to Saturday and the resale was in the $4000 range for bad seats.  Now, the bad seats are $500.  The Michigan Difference.
  • NT Cam Goode transfer from UCF is planning to stay in Ann Arbor for another year.
  • Former Detroit 5-star DT Justin Rodgers is transferring from Kentucky and in the portal.

I retired early telling my wife, "That's it I'm done". Still for a couple years people would reach out to see if I was interested in coming back to the workforce. My wife would always remind me of what I said, while true, I still wanted to hear their offer. Maybe Jim does too...

Disappointed that Jim hasn't come out to make a statement that he staying, although every new rumor that surfaces about him and the NFL does not dictate that he's obligated to come out and shoot it down after saying just a few weeks ago that he's staying

Notwithstanding the longer this drags on the more of a negative effect it creates on recruiting and retention, while on flip side, if he is staying, the longer this drags out the more he's sabotaging himself.

It takes 10 seconds for him to come out and make a statement that he's staying. If one is not made this week I would think his intentions are in leaving, or that his hired agent is in the process of finalizing with Warde a new contract.

Scholarship limits doesn't matter because of NIL? I didn't know that can somebody explain that to me

Ron ... Teams can have 125 players on the active roster and 85 on scholarship. A team can go over the scholarship limit by getting enough NIL for some walk-ons to compensate them for their tuition, room, and expenses. It's largely happening with transfers, because there's a loophole in the transfer rules for walk-ons already. Remember schools do not offer NIL agreements; individual or corporate entities offer NIL largely thru collectives.

So the NIL pays for their tuition. So they're listed as Walk-Ons. Now I understand thank you

Interesting on the NIL and scholarship limits, learn something new every day. So the guys that are leaving its the old writing on the depth chart or the bird chirping in their ear that its time to move on.

If either Carolina or Denver to make him an offer Jim's good as gone. I really think he's hell bent on being a SB winning coach and not having John being able to hang that over his head. Jim is a uber-competitive SoB and I'm sure the SB is on his bucket list.

Bring Meyer in, and I'm just one person, but I wouldn't give a fuck if Michigan won it or not!!!

I don't think Rogers reads him too good, not able to make UM academic standards. I wouldn't blame Jimmy for rolling. Listen, it'll all about $$ and anyone that thinks there's still loyalty left in the game is foolish. If he hadn't performed so well, the school would have shit canned him....no loyalty. His resume is on fire right now so if he's gonna roll, now's the time to do it. Just need something done quickly before it wrecks the 2023 recruiting class. Oh yeah...it already sucks.
