For some reason, Michigan can't seem to have a great Football and Basketball team at the same time. When Harbaugh was struggling Juwan's squad was playing and recruiting at a very high level. Now, the reverse is happening and Michigan Football has won back 2 back BIG Ten Championships and Juwan is struggling to fill his roster for next season.
Michigan Basketball has 3 rosters spots open for next season and a long list of guys not interested in playing for the Wolverines from the portal. Including, TN transfer Olivier Nkamhoua who was a strong Michigan lean and UC Riverside Guard Zyon Pullin. So, what's the deal? We know Juwan can develop players to the NBA and there is plenty of playing time in Ann Arbor. My best guess is the reason these players are in the portal, they're looking to get paid and right now Michigan's Basketball NIL program doesn't seem to match other major programs. Michigan's own Hunter Dickinson reportedly got $2M a year at Kansas. Hunter reports his NIL deal at Michigan was barely in 6 figures.
The Michigan coaches must feel a bit defeated because when they recruit at a high level, the players leave after a year closer to their floor than their ceiling and transfers struggle to qualify when they want to play in Ann Arbor. Add the NIL situation and it's a losing battle right now. Michigan needs to find at least 2 portal players and will continue to look for a diamond in the rough!

I disagree, I don't think Juwan has done much to develop players. Didn't see any development in Caleb Houstan or Jett Howard. Don't really think Moussa Diabate developed either. He was an energy guy from the start and didn't see much evolution in his game by the time he left the University. Someone want to say Kobe Bufkin? Maybe, or was that inspite of Juwan instead of because of him? For the high profile recruits, its about visibility more than development. Its about making runs in the tournament. I used to think Juwan was a great recruiter but lacked significantly in coaching acumen. Never impressed with his Xs and Os, or his in game adjustments. But 20/20 hindsight, I think he was getting recruits cause of his name and NBA pedigree, but were seeing now that only goes so far. Outside of 2020-2021 season, Howard's results at UofM have been MEH at best.

I guess NIL is a bigger deal to the guys that know they don't have much of an NBA future, aka Hunter D.. The more talented 3&D wings and the Gs, they're looking to showcase themselves for the Association! Not saying Hunter's not talented, but he has a talent that the NBA hasn't valued in at least 2 decades. Bigs in the NBA have to be rim runners and rim protectors, not plodders that play mostly with their back to the basket. I can see how some Michigan fans are a little bitter that he left, but I can also understand his motivation for leaving. Ol' Man always said, gotta make hay while the sun is shinning! Overseas is probably an option for HD, I don't watch so I don't know if they put anymore value into an old school C than the NBA. Even with that, you have to be wired a special way to pull up and go make a long term career overseas. There's no place like the good old US of A and I've read and seen some stuff from guys that went over to play overseas. It was cool for a couple of 3 years and then they just wanted to come home, even if it meant finding something else besides basketball,

I guess that we'll have to agree to disagree. HD was on a full athletic scholarship, and he is complaining about barely "earning" 6 figures? Cry me a river. Greedy whiner. I thought that is one reason someone goes to school: they can get a degree just in case their ball-playing skills aren't good enough for the pros.
Cormac. HD earned a degree from Michigan and then decided to pursue a $2M/yr job that includes a masters degree. If you don't understand why a guy wouldn't want to fogoe millions, then I can't help you.
