Thoughts on LC and What's next.........

So Lloyd drove his Carr into the sunset yesterday. There is a ton of national reaction, as there should be. I will try to filter some of that for you and show you what I believe to be the important points.

There's no betting in coaching! Is there? Here are the Sportsbooks odds on the next Michigan coach:

Les Miles, LSU coach -- 2/1 Kirk Ferentz, Iowa coach -- 9/2 Mike Trgovac, Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator -- 5/1 Brian Kelly, Cincinnati coach and former Central Michigan and Grand Valley coach -- 6/1 Ron English, U-M defensive coordinator -- 6/1 Bret Bielema, Wisconsin coach -- 7/1 Bobby Petrino, Atlanta Falcons coach -- 10/1 Jon Gruden, Tampa Bay Bucs coach -- 10/1 Jim Harbaugh, Stanford coach and U-M alum -- 10/1 Bill Cowher, ex-Pittsburgh Steelers coach -- 15/1 Field (all others) -- 2/1

Important Tidbits:
  • Lloyd seriously considered retiring after last years Rose Bowl. I wonder what would have happened against App. State if he did?
  • One of the interesting points that came out of Monday's new conference was that Bill Martin has been working on his search since September. He has been doing background checks on a list of 12 guys and hopes to have someone in place by the end of the year.
  • Bill is looking for a current Head Coach with the character of LC and will pay anywhere between $2-$3M a year.
  • Some Wild Card Names that have been mentioned: Jim Grobe, Wake Forest, Tim Murphy, Harvard, Brady Hoke, head coach at Ball State,
  • College Football News: Likens Michigan Football to IBM (I would of used Microsoft) and North Carolina Basketball. That Les might not be the best fit.
  • Les got emotional during his press conference when talking about LSU and Michigan. If offered Les is going to have the toughest decision of his life. Losing the SEC Championship game might be the best medicine.
  • Mitch Albom does another magical job writing about Lloyd.
  • Louisiana columnist says's it will be difficult to turn down Michigan if your Les Miles: Bear Bryant had everything going at Texas A&M. He still left when "momma called" from Alabama.

My Take:

If Michigan wants Les then they need to go after him now. Get a commitment from him and then let him coach out the rest of the year. Keeping it private or going public would be LSU's call. He could keep the Michigan assistant coaches on staff and they could continue recruiting until Les's season is completed in January. I don't think waiting another month for the candidate you want is a big deal. If Les comes to Ann Arbor, he will either be able to lock down the current recruits or go get other ones. I'm not worried about losing a few guys. Also, Bo Pelini his defensive coordinator, is most likely going to back to Nebraska to coach anyway. Having a coach in place by the end of the year might be too aggressive for Bill Martin.

Reading between the lines from comments from Bill Maritn: Harabough, Ron Enlish, and Mike Trgovac is out. (Bill mentioned he wanted to know how many DUI's they had - regarding background checks, and that the next Michigan coach needed head coaching experience)

The one candidate that I don't want to see get the job is: Mike Debord. Please, No! I don't care how close of a friend to Lloyd he is, this is the worst possible candidate.
