As we have discussed here before, Nike has pretty much positioned itself as the premier summer event for high school seniors (even some juniors). It's called the Opening and its an event at Nike's HQ right after the 4th of July. It's pretty much the top event for most players (some suggest that the Elite 11 is the top event for QB's).
Players qualify for the event by attending one of the regional Nike Opening camps. There was one last weekend in Chicago where a number of Michigan commits and prospects attended.
QB Commit Brandon Peters attended and didn't receive an invite: "I learned a lot about my game today and what I need to do to get better," he said. "I need to work on how I use my lower body a lot better and have to develop a better consistency at keeping my eyes level as I scan the field. I thought I performed alright today but I definitely have some work to do."
Peters has now been committed to the Wolverines for almost a month now, and couldn't be happier with the choice. He pledged to Jim Harbaugh on his last visit to campus.
"Man, I'm really excited," he said. "I couldn't be more excited about being part of such a great program and playing for such a great staff. I just plan on getting to work and doing what I can to improve myself until I finally get to campus this winter (Peters will enroll early)."
Michael Onwenu OL from Cass Tech: Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech Top247 offensive guard Michael Onwenu played three different positions and was dominant at all three.
Offensive guard, his projected position on the next level, the 6-foot-3, 365-pound Onwenu was a force at the point of attack, showing he could handle different styles of defensive tackles throughout the day, whether it was a big, quick prospect like four-star Naquan Jones, or the shorter, more powerful Brice Brand. Onwenu can get it done a number of ways, whether it’s just burying opposition or redirecting the pressure.
Onwenu took snaps at offensive tackle, showing his athleticism and feet, stoning Top247 defensive end Austin Robertson on one rep. Onwenu is definitely an interior guy on the next level, but on the prep level you can line him up at every position on both sides of the ball along both lines.
Daelin Hayes: preformed well but didn't receive an invite either. Hayes did mention at the camp that he has been talking to Michigan's staff lately.
Lavert Hill from Detroit and a PSU commit who has been spending a bunch of time in A2 lately, did receive and invite by running a 4.4 in the 40 and showing nice footwork during drills.
Donnie Corley teammate of Hill also earned an invite showing great hands and being a deep threat during camp. He is considering Michigan but right now the insiders believe he is a MSU lean.
- Michigan basketball target Kenny Williams committed to UNC yesterday.
- Matt Wile signed with the Carolina Panthers
