Michigan Friday: 2022 Captains

*Sorry about missing Thursday, I was traveling for a wedding and got to spend some time in Ann Arbor.  It's move in weekend and everyone and their brother are in A2 right now!  :)

Tom Brady calls becoming a captain at Michigan his greatest honor in football.  Not 7 Super Bowl rings or MVP's, being named a leader by his college teammates.  When the GOAT says something like that, its a very special honor.

This years captains include:

Cade McNamara - the presumed starting QB and the QB that lead Michigan to a Big Ten Championship.  Word out of camp is he has been a leader in the summer and during Fall camp.  No surprise here.

Mazi Smith - there was so much excitement when Mazi committed to Michigan.  Then the hype started to simmer down a bit as he was learning to become a college football player.  The hyper meter is now on full blast and Mazi and become a leader and a very good Big Ten football player.  Sky is the limit for this young man and this is also not a surprise pick.

Erik All - A TE that had one of those year saving plays when he took the ball 70 yards against Penn State to take the lead late in the 4th quarter.  Erik is considered one of the best TE's in the country and I expect will have a huge impact this season as defensives try to cover all of Michigan's WR options.  A great choice for captain.

Ronnie Bell - was clearly one of the top players on the team last season when he went out with an ACL in the first game of the season.  As a captain, Ronnie was there for every coinflip and to cheer on his teammates as they rode a waver for a magical season.   This is a great honor to be named a captain for the second year.

Mike Sainristil - Jimmy loves players that can play more then one position or even plays multiple sports.  Mike has moved from offense to defense this season and seems to be finding a role in Michigan's defensive backfield.  We know that is not an easy transition and Mike seems to be thriving and not complaining.  His teammates noticed and made him a captain.  Hell of an honor for a guy that hasn't even taken one defensive snap yet.  Congrats Mike!

As the tweet says, congratulations to all the above names, as this is the greatest honor to bestow a Michigan Man.

  • ESPN gives Michigan 2% to win the National Championship.  I love it, Michigan plays the best when nobody expects them to do anything! Put it on the White Board!!!
  • How did I miss that Jim Mora is now the head coach of UConn?
It blows my mind that the Big Ten season starts tomorrow! So here are my first Big Ten picks of the year!

Nebraska -11.5 vs Northwestern: You never know what you are going to get with these 2 teams.  I thought Northwestern would play well against MSU to kickoff last season and they got rolled.  The Cornhuskers are painfully bad at times.  I do think Nebraska is the better team, but don't think they will cover the 11.5 spread.  Northwestern 10 Nebraska 14

Wyoming @ Illinois -13:  It's too early in the season to tell what either team has but I assume Illinois is building something here and probably a year or two away still.   I like Illinois here 24-10.

The NW/Nebraska game should be interesting. 1st its in Dublin, so it could come down to who traveled better. NW typically isn't as good on the road as they are at home, whether they are decent or bad. This should be Scott Frost's last season if they don't turn it around. That fan base has to be running out of patience! Wyoming/Illinois???? I know nothing about Wyoming, but Illinois should extra ordinarily boring. Bielema will run the ball. Then he run it some more. After that he'll call a run. And just when he's got the opposition ready for the run, he'll run it some more.

Is Peters still the QB at Illinois?

No, he's an UDFA. Was signed by the Chargers but they waived him. Big Bert's teams with be tough, especially at the LoS. He'll do for Illinois what Schiano did for Rutgers. They will no longer be a doormat and get punked by MAC teams. But his ceiling is only so high. Its the old Wiscky O game plan. Heavy run, and mix in some play action. It's going to take him a while to recruit to his system. Not sure what Lovey Smith's system was, but it definitely isn't conducive to what Bielema wants to do.
