Michigan Monday: A Too Early Look At MSU

As Michigan fans we have a lot of reasons why MSU has won so many recent games: fluke plays, bad officiating, and this being Sparty's Super Bowl.    All of that is true and at the same time an excuse.   Every year Michigan has taken the field against MSU under Jim Harbaugh, Michigan has had the better, more talented team.  So, what has been happening?

Michigan continually gets out coached in this match-up.  Which makes zero sense.  Last year, Michigan's defense wasn't prepared for tempo and for some reason didn't game plan to stop Kenny Walker.   The COVID year, Michigan's starting QB Joe Milton, said they didn't' scout the MSU defense properly.

This has to change and hopefully changed a week ago.  The Michigan coaches need to give this game a similar focus to Ohio State or any top tier team.  They need to game plan to stop what MSU does and expect to see a much different team with two weeks to prepare.  We know for some reason, the MSU defense will magically become on the 85 Chicago Bears, MSU QB will become Pat Mahomes, and their RB will turn into Barry Sanders.   Expect it.

Record 3-4, 2-0 in the MAC and 1-3 in the Big Ten.

Best Win: Wisconsin
Worst Loss: Minnesota in East Lansing

Pass: 242.9 (65th)
Run: 106 (116th)
Score: 27.3 (144)
Give Up: 27.1 (58)

When you score 27.3 but give up 27.1, that is not a great indicator of a winning football.

Big Ten Thoughts:

  • It would have been better for Iowa's offense if they just took a knee on every play on Saturday.  How long is Iowa going to protect the Ferentz family?  Not too many coaches survive a race incident and hiring a family member that breaks University policy.  I guess having an embarrassing offense doesn't rank as a top issue.
  • Rutgers got a W over IU
  • Wisconsin showing some heart, beating Purdue in Madison.  I was a bit surprised they didn't beat MSU the week prior.
  • Maryland struggled to beat Northwestern without Tua 2, but found a way.
  • October Minnesota hits again.  PJ should negotiate a contract extension, only in the month of September.
  • Illinois seems to be in the driver's seat for the Big Ten West, their only loss, is to Indiana.

-Jourdan Lewis gets a pick against the Lions and then injures his foot with a Lisfranc.  He is out for the year.

on paper Michigan should win going away against MSU. Their defensive woes are well documented and the OL stinks. But for whatever reason, Michigan plays down to MSU. They need to put the pedal to the floor and leave it there for 4 qtrs

At the Big House and under the lights. Harbaugh and company better bring it! I am hoping the bitter taste of defeat last year will keep them from overlooking MSU again.

Jordan Lewis is one of my favorite player since he is a local kid. I wish him all the best and a speedy recovery....Michigan better come out with the same intensity and fire like MSU or else it is going to be a long night like a blind date.

I was on one of those blind dates .... I would rather burn in hell for eternity (probably going to anyway), than do that date over again .... maybe my memory is faltering, but did not Brady go on a blind date with Giselle? Maybe I am mixing up people!

All of Michigan's losses to MSU under Harbaugh have been in some form or another self inflicted. If Michigan can manage to get out of their own way in this game then it shouldn't even be close. Since Michigan is intentionally focusing on MSU particularly this year and that there's so much on the line if they lose this game, I am predicting that MSU will pull out trick plays, misdirection, and so forth because they know that they aren't as talented, and that Michigan will still bitch slap MSU Saturday. IMHO!!!

SD...sorry about your experience on that blind date... I'm pretty sure you're in better State now than before...

Tucker got $90M for this game only; sparty doesn't care if they lose all the rest. He's not the coach they are paying him to be, go out and show them!

Ok, Bucknut Boy. You still think Ohio 'clearly has a better offense than michigan'... as you wrote? Against Penn St., Michigan has CLEARLY better stats and eye test, than do your bucknuts. And you know what that tells us... nothing. Zip zero.

The point is that you make these rather rudimentary comments, and don't seem to understand football. What both games against Penn St show is how each team reacts to that particular team - and allows other teams to plan/prepare. Nothing more.
