Michigan Friday: House Money

Michigan Basketball has nothing to lose tonight, they have already won this season.   They went from the worst team in the Big Ten with a head coach wanting to fight everyone to maybe the nicest guy in basketball and the Sweet 16.

Michigan Basketball is back and Dusty is to thank.   Since Michigan should be playing with a calm mind tonight, what do they need to win?  Auburn is good and athletic.   Michigan needs to be able shoot the 3 and get the ball to Vlad in the post.  Michigan has to make it's layups and like against Texas A&M, make your free throws!  From a defensive standpoint, contest the 3 ball and rebound.

Auburn is a big favorite for a Sweet 16 game at -8.5 points.  House Money!

  • Michigan Football is hosting Top RB Javian Osborne today.  He is coming off a visit to ND.
  • Gary Danielson is retiring after this football season.   Thank goodness and please get some young talent on CBS.
  • Iowa Freshman Center who entered the transfer portal Owen Freeman picked Creighton as his next stop.  Dusty was in the mix but is busy right now.

Iowa - Michigan games in Iowa City always seem to follow one script.  It feels like Michigan should be blowing out the Hawkeyes but for some reason it's still too close a game.  Something will happen to Michigan and that 20-point lead will become a 20-21 loss.

Raise your hand, if you saw the ball bouncing alone on the 5-yard line and you started to wonder if that was the first scene in that movie, we have seen too many times?  Or when Iowa is driving with 4 minutes left inside the 10-yard line to make it a one score game?  But Iowa's offense did the most Iowa thing ever, on 4th and 2 they threw a 1-yard pass that the TE had to go down to his knees to catch.

Any win in Iowa City is a good win, but in the Cheers and Jeers, I will highlight why this wasn't an Indy type blow out.

Cheers:
  • JJ played smarter this week, quicker decisions
  • Blake Corum for Heisman
  • Roman Wilson is a really good WR
  • OL played well
  • Dline stopped the run for the most part
  • Moody was 100% on the day
  • Edwards really gives the team a nice boost when he is in
  • Mike Morris might have saved the game with 2 sacks
  • There is something about Okie
  • Michigan left Iowa City with a W
  • Playing calling was better
Jeers
  • JJ missed another long ball when Wilson was buck naked open
  • At times a little too conservative on offense, I remember a 3rd down in the redzone where we ran a sweep to the short side.  Need a TD there.
  • Lack of a pass rush kept the Hawkeyes in the game
  • Iowa converted a 3rd and 25 and got it to the 1-yard line? WTF?
  • Sainristil was getting his flowers from Klatt and Johnson prior to the game and then had a poor outing
  • Everyone knows that Iowa is going to throw to the TE's, how in the hell can't we cover them?
  • How did they not review that JJ fumble?  I don't know the exact rule here but if you're trying to throw the pass forward and get hit and the ball goes backwards, isn't it still incomplete if your arm is going forward? or since it goes backwards is it automatically a fumble?
  • The play JJ gets his foot stepped on, looked to be a big play down the field
  • Did Brad Robbins have punter envy?
  • There was a report by Michigan radio that Roman Wilson was taken back to the locker room with an injury.
The game was not perfect and Michigan left Iowa City with a much-needed victory.  Michigan had zero turnovers and somehow the official's calls went the Wolverines way for a change.  Happy to see some banged up players back on the field but the pass rush and LB play still needs to improve with some big boys still left of the schedule.

This is a minor Jeers, but can we please stop giving up meaningless TD's at the end of the games?

Michigan Friday: Iowa Steals Senior Night

The high off the MSU win didn't last long as Michigan dropped one against a hot Iowa team at Crisler last night.  The 3-1 record needed off 4 straight home games is now 2-2, with a trip to Columbus still on the board this weekend.  Michigan continues to ride the bubble as they struggle to find any consistency.   It's very frustrating when talent doesn't translate to having a good team on the floor night after night.

BTW, my take is Michigan should decline a NIT invite if it comes to that.  Best to put this season in the rear-view mirror.

  • Mgoblog points out that Michigan's depth on the DT and Oline is scary low this spring.  The team might have to go fishing in the Transfer Portal after Spring Ball.
  • Jimmy has added John Morookian to his staff.  John seems like he is an offensive line guy.
  • Nik Stauskas went off for 57 and 43 points in the G-League on back-to-back nights this week and earned a 2-year contract with the Celtics.

Michigan Monday MLK Day: A Busy Weekend

The Michigan Regents decided to fire Michigan's President Mark Schlissel who had an inappropriate relationship within his organization. Mark had already resigned but the Regents removed him immediately.   If you're wondering how this affects the Football team? I will tell you that The University of Michigan is a multi-Billion-dollar business.  Yes, Football is important but not as important as the Hospital for example.  Ok, that wasn't an answer. Insiders believe this was a positive development for the football team and an NIL program.  Which hopefully means a positive for Jimmy staying.

Update you say? Jimmy was very involved in the recruiting weekend and was at the hockey game again.   The Raiders did lose a close game in Cincy.   The players want to keep Rich Bisaccia but NFL insiders don't believe he has a legit shot at the full-time job.   To recap: Jimmy is doing his regular job and now The Raiders are in the market for a head coach.  The Raiders will have to follow the Rooney Rule, so this nowhere near the finish line.  No other NFL teams has interviewed Jimmy officially

  • 2023 TE Andrew Rappleyea has committed to Michigan.  Andrew is from the New England Forest where Michigan grows large TE's.   Andrew is a 4-star 6'4 and 225 pounds.  Welcome Big Man!
  • 2023 DL Joel Starlings has decommitted.  If you remember, Joel committed then said his recruitment is still 100% open.
  • Jake Moody is returning for another year at Michigan.  This is huge news for the best kicker in College Football.
  • Iowa's Kirk Ferentz and his program has had racial issues.  This past week, he received a long-term contract extension, then Kirk dissolved a diversity group that recommend to Iowa that he step down.   Kirk is a good football coach, but sometimes a person is in a role just too long.
  • Former Michigan coach Al Washington, who left Ann Arbor for Columbus.  Will now be the DL Coach at ND.   Seem like a fair trade.
  • Moe Wagner and Luka Doncic mixed it up over the weekend.

Iowa Preview

Time:
8:00
Location: Lucas Oil Stadium
Weather: Indoors
TV: Fox
Line Michigan -11

Dear Jimmy,

I've been writing you letters every Friday asking you and your team to prove it to me that times have changed and that your team is different.  You sir proved that on Saturday without a shadow of a doubt.  I also want to thank you for your off-field decision making this week.  Donating your bonus to AD staff that took a pay cut is an extremely generous offer.   I also want to give you a heartfelt thank you for recognizing the young students that we lost at Oxford High School with a patch on your jerseys this Saturday.

In my entire life that was a top 5 Michigan moment great feeling having your team win THE GAME last Saturday.  Wonderful win, but I hope you turned the page on Monday.   There are plenty of examples of a team getting a huge program changing win and then failing the next weekend.   The latest example was MSU beating the current #2 team in the nation and then falling the next weekend to Purdue.  I've used the USA Hockey Russia and Finland example a couple of times, so I will spare you that analogy.   The bottom line is that Michigan's win over OSU gets diminished some if your team doesn't show up on Saturday night.   Playing for a championship is different and your team needs to be ready to play just as hard as they did last Saturday this Saturday.

Michigan has never played in the Big Ten Championship game, so this is a new feeling and experience for your program and us fans.   It still feels pretty weird, actually.   I'm sure you feel the same.   I hope you went "Hoosiers" the Movie on your team this week to keep them focused on playing Michigan Football this Saturday.   Michigan's #1 goal every year should be winning the Big Ten Title and you and your team finally has its shot.  I expect the team to run through a wall and Iowa on Saturday night.  The other stuff will get figured out.

I know you love my Friday advice, so I will continue it with Iowa this week.   Iowa plays old Midwest football.   They have a very conservative offense and win by playing elite defense.  If they win the turnover battle, they win games.  What this means is they want to play a low scoring game, that they can steal with a field goal at the end.  What Michigan needs to do is to play smart football.   What I mean here is run the ball but mix in a solid passing game.   The Iowa DB's love interceptions, so Cade needs to continue his smart decision making in the passing game.   If Michigan scores points and touchdowns, you will win the game.  Stay aggressive.

Iowa is well coached, so don't expect getting turnovers and they love throwing to the tight ends.  I've watched too many Michigan - Iowa games where Iowa beat Michigan with TE throws.   The team that executes better will win this game.    Pressure the stiff Iowa QB with Hutch and Ojabo, confuse him with your zone and man to man defense.   Run the Michigan offense like we saw last weekend.  The one that ran the ball with authority and threw the ball to set up touchdowns.  If last weekend was a bad match-up for your defense, this offense is right in your sights.   I expect a huge game from guys like Brad Hawkins and Josh Rosh who have a ton of battle scars of falling short in making this game year after year.

I don't have to remind you what is on the line this Saturday.  Time to cement your legacy and getting everyone in this program a ring.   Play to win the Big Ten Championship on Saturday.   Prove it to me!

The Original Michigan Monday: An Early Look at Iowa

Michigan has another game this weekend and it still seems very strange.  Ann Arbor resident and NBC lead broadcaster Mike Tirico, summed up the weekend late on Sunday night after the Ravens beat the Browns:  "For the week, Harbaugh's 2 - Ohio nothing."

Guys, I'm still feeling the joy from that win.  It just feels so damn good!

I've been keeping an eye on Big Ten Championship tickets but it seems Ohio State fans that purchased ahead is trying to get a bump in their holiday budgets by reselling tickets for ridiculous prices.   I'm not going to purchase a pair of bad seats for over $1000.   At that point, you just watch it in HD.

Michigan now has its "do you believe in Miracle's game" over the Russians and now must play Finland for the Gold Metal.

On to Iowa:

The Hawkeyes came out hot to a 6-0 record with winds over #9 ISU and #4 PSU.   Then they hit 2 loses in a row to Purdue and Wisconsin then finished 4-0 over bad Big Ten teams.   Iowa is known to have a very solid defense but struggles on offense.

Pass yards per game: 178

Rushing yards per game: 121

Iowa scores: 25 points per game

Give up: 17 points

If Ohio State is a bad match-up for the Wolverines, Iowa is a good match on both sides of the ball.  There is no mystery with Iowa and they win by playing hard nose football and count on getting a few turnovers.   Iowa is all about waiting for the game to change.  Best example is the Penn State game.  Iowa was getting run off the field, then Clifford goes down and the Hawkeyes make a comeback and win the game.

The key for the Wovlerins is to not make mistakes and play fundamental football.

Michigan is -10.5

  • Michigan landed a 2023 commit from 4-star DT Joel Starlings from VA!  Welcome big man!
  • Deep thought:  Hard for OSU to win their Golden Pants pendent when Michigan wears Navy pants. 👍
  • Crazy coaching job changes:
    • Riley to USC - PAC 12 equals an easier road then SEC.  OK in the SEC is Ole Miss.
    • Louisiana's Billy Napier goes to Florida.  Good hire!
    • LSU?
    • Nick Sheridan out as IU's OC
    • Now what at OK?  Big game Bob stepping in for the Bowl Game
    • Duke thinks they can find a better coach then David Cutcliffe
    • Reports are that Joe Moorehead might take the Akron job.  Seems like he could get a better one then that.
    • Ryan Osborn on Michigan's non-field coaching staff, was hired by UConn
    • Jerry Kill gets another head job at New Mexico State
    • 21 head coaching opening in total this year so far
  • Hutch and H2 combine for the Walter Camps Defensive and Offensive players of the week.  Add the same award for the Big Ten Players of the Week.
  • PFF College says that no other player has had more QB hurries then Hutch did in the OSU game since they have been tracking it since 2014. That number was 15.
  • John Madden texts Jimmy: “as good as an offensive line performance he’s seen in a game”
  • I can't imagine how many people watched The GAME? 15M maybe?

Michigan Monday: What's next?

That is the question for Michigan Football.  Jim Harbaugh has yet to sign an extension but has already let go of his much aligned defensive coordinator.   There are a ton of rumors floating around, with names like Derek Mason and the explosive oil and water combination of Jimmy and Will Muschamp.  Mason's name has also being tied to the DC opening at LSU.

One name I didn't consider was former Texas and Louisville head coach Charlie Strong.  He is currently on Saban's non-field coaching staff at Alabama.   He would bring more recruiting to Florida and is a pretty smart guy when it comes to defense.  He was South Florida's head coach prior to Alabama.   He is also good friends with Brian Jean-Mary who I believe has a great shot at staying on staff, no matter who gets hired as DC.

Michigan Basketball took care of business with another great second half on the road against Nebraska on Christmas evening.   That is the game I think Franz should have every time out, a quiet 20 points.  Love Brown's defense and Smith hit a huge shot when the Wolverines started to lose momentum.   Hunter is clearly the best freshman in Ann Arbor since Trey Burke.   Loved the effort and any win on the road in the Big Ten is a good win.

Next game is against Maryland on New Years Eve at 7:00 in College Park.  The Northwestern game on Sunday is set for 7:30.

  • Iowa loses their bowl game when MIZZU tests positive for COVID.

  • MSU QB Rocky Lombardi is transferring to Northern Illinois.

  • CA 4 star CB Ceyair Wright is announcing on Saturday.  Michigan is in his final 5, but he is going to USC.

  • Congratulations to Jacksonville for winning the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes, Trevor will get to play his NFL games only 6 hours away from Clemson.

  • Duncan Robinson went off on Christmas with 6 three pointers.  This guy continues to surprise and amaze me.

  • More on the 2022 commitment from Connor Jones.   He is 6'7 and 285 pounds out of Colorado.  His early offer list included CSU, New Mexico, IU, Oregon State, Northwestern, VA, and WVU.  He seems to be a kid closer to his basement then his ceiling and will probably need a redshirt year to get with the S&C program. He was recruited by Ed Warriner and Michigan was his dream school.  Great to lock him in early to what hopes to be a class full of lineman on both sides of the ball.

  • Kentucky Basketball is a very 2020 1-6 to start the season.  So it does happen to other programs?

Michigan Friday: Bowling and The Big Ten Season Starts

The Michigan Football team will understand who they will play on Sunday afternoon in a Bowl Game.   We have heard anything from the Holiday Bowl vs. PAC 12 team, Gator Bowl vs. SEC Team, or to the Citrus against Alabama or Auburn.   The latest buzz seems to be the Citrus who would love a Michigan - Alabama match-up, which packed Jerry's stadium a few years ago.

Juwan Howard's program gets no rest for the weary as they take the floor at home tonight against a good Iowa team.  Tip is an early one at 6:30 and will be on FS1.  Iowa is 6-2 with loses to DePaul and San Diego State, they do have recent wins over Texas Tech and Syracuse.   Let's hope the team can shake off the cold from Tuesday night.

  • Jourdan Lewis had a nice pick in a Dallas loss last night.

  • Chase Winovich is honoring Larry Prout Jr. on this cleats this Sunday.   Well Done Chase!

  • Michigan Basketball has started a new series with UK, that will kick off next year with a game in London and finish with a home and home.  This should be great for recruiting.   Scheduling difficult games in basketball is a smart thing, the opposite is true in football.   Ohio State's non-conference in football this year was FAU, Cincinnati, and Miami of Ohio.

Michigan Tuesday: Army Is Coming

I don't like when Michigan plays the service academies.   I'm sure Army gets a nice payment for traveling to the Big House, but I believe its a tough situation for the Wolverine players and coaches.   Army of course plays an offense that you don't see very often in the triple option.  They are also a well respected group of young men who are attending the academy to protect our great nation.

As you might expect they run a lot.  Against Rice last weekend, they ran 56 times for 231 yards and threw 8 passes and completed 3 for 53 yards.  If you back it up a season, in 2018 they threw 98 times and completed 52 for 1041 yards vs. 824 runs for 4062 yards.   This team wants to make you look foolish on the ground.   In 2018, they were 11-2 and beat Houston in the Bowl game 70-14.

Don Brown will have his hands full this week but that is nothing new as he has faced the Black Knights many times.  This day as also been circled on the calendar for many months and the team should be prepared to stop that offense.   The issue for the Black Knights will be stopping Michigan's offense and talented WR's and RB's.  Michigan will have big advantage on the offensive line and at the skill positions.

Michigan is -23.5 in the game.

  • Magnus at Touch the Banner does a nice job on tracking former Wolverines and how they are doing.  Few Highlights: Crawford had 2 TD's for Cal and Oliver Martin had 1 TD for Iowa.

  • Iowa OT Alaric Jackson from Detroit and should be a Wolverine as Drevno didn't send him a LOI on NSD (BTW Jackson is expected to be a high NFL Draft pick). He hurt himself this weekend and could be out 6 weeks which puts him in doubt against Michigan.

  • Congratulations to Alan a Big House Blog reader on this close score prediction and winning the new Braylon Edwards Book!

Michigan Post Game: Big AL Awakens

David Guralnick / The Detroit News
On the 11th day game, the press box window opened and the sun shined brightly off the portly Michigan offensive coordinator.  This wasn't a ordinary November sun, this ray of light was bringing a message from above.   The message was only for Big Al Borges and it was regarding the special talent that is Denard Robinson and Devin Gardner.   See today was a special day, it was the last time we would watch #16 cut and accelerate like no other Wolverine before him in the stadium that Yost built.  This day was for Denard and his fellow seniors.

After the sun shine brightly off his bald head, Big Al rose from his chair with the knowledge and creativity that had be lacking 10 games before.   He had 2 tremendous quarterbacks, one blessed with unique running ability, while another was blessed with a strong arm.   He then started to remember the week before how the challenger from Chicago had come into this same stadium and was a few seconds away from beating his beloved Wolverines.   The challenger from Chicago deployed two quarterbacks who were blessed with similar talents as the Wolverine QB's and had moved the ball easily on the #1 ranked pass defense in the land.   Then another memory flashed in Big Al's mind eye, it was the Nebraska game from a year ago and the double option.   Big Al now understood what needed to be done.  His top throwing QB shouldn't be playing WR, he should be throwing.  His top running QB, shouldn't be sitting on the sideline or trying to beat defenses with his arm, he should be running.  He did have talent at wide receiver with the likes of Roundtree and Gallon.  He anticipated that both would rise up and make game changing catches.

An easy feeling fell over Big Al and the crowd at Michigan stadium that day.   They knew they had released the power of Michigan's offense and it was running as smoothly as it had all year.  So smoothly the Michigan students forget to leave their tailgate and come into the stadium to watch the forgone conclusion.

The day seemed to be perfect before the Wolverines top running back went down with a terrible broken leg/ankle in the first quarter.   The Iowa running back curse had befallen the other team, it was a cruel and unfortunate way for the young man to end his year.   That injury was the single cloud in a blue November sky filled with maize sunshine.

After the game, that felt like it took minutes instead of hours, Big Al leans back in his chair and stares at his can of diet coke and thinks about his only regret of the year.  "If only I had thought about this 3 months before,  our fate would have been so much different"

Yes, it would have.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Cheers:
  • Congratulations to the seniors!
  • Loved seeing Joe Reynolds catching balls and President Jack Kennedy getting the final snap
  • The Iowa loss streak is over
Jeers:
  • There seems to be some issues on kick off coverage.  Please fix before next week.
  • The defense was confused in the 1st and 4th quarters.  It was mostly the 2nd team in the 4th

Words can't describe what the likes of Denard Robinson and Jordan Kovacs have meant to this football program.  They have been through hell and back in their 4 years and both guys kept this team together.  Congratulations to all the seniors on their day!

I feel bad for Fitz, who clearly has a year ending injury.  That is a tough loss for the Wolverines and their trip to C-Bus next week.   I also worry about Michigan's defense next week against Braxton Miller.  The Michigan D, has struggled against the likes of Air Force and Northwestern with mobile QB's.  Braxton Miller will be the best mobile QB they have seen this year (outside of practice). It seems more and more that Michigan is playing Joe Bolden and James Ross at LB's.  Next week will be handful for two true freshman.   Michigan will need very good games from both units next week if they are going to beat the Buckeyes but tonight rest easy Maize and Blue faithful and keep Fitz in your prayers.
